Before you get to it though, a lengthy disclaimer pops up on the screen about how various people aren't responsible for any trauma, ill health or death after watching "what you are about to watch", basically.
i watched it alone one night, at about 2am, with the phone right next to me. i was shitting my pants, i'm telling you. I was scared too man, but it's crack funny when you hear about other folks bricking their pants about the same thing 1. The Omen 2. The Omen II 3. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 ( that was the first one in the series I saw as a wee nipper ) 4. Evil Dead 5. 1. The Swarm (Septugenarians Olivia de Havilland, Ben Johnson and Fred MacMuray in a 3-way love triangle whilst THE KILLER BEES attack! Michael Caine yells a lot.)
2. The Lonely Lady (Pia Zadora's bracing epic about a screenwriter who "fucks her way to the top". Change "screenwriter" to "actress" and you have a Pia biopic. Memorable scene: Pia gets raped with a garden hose on the front lawn by Ray Liotta; later, her impotent husband picks up the hose and asks, "or is THIS more your thing?") 3. Showgirls (Joe Esterhas gives us everything but the lesbian incestuous kitten-eating kitchen sink. Elizabeth Berkley acts "angry" by squeezing a ketchup bottle really hard. Also flip-flops like a dolphin during orgasm.) 4. Moment By Moment (Lily Tomlin and John Travolta, sharing the same haircut, make out a lot. Includes the memorable repeated line "Oh, Strip!" - which is, of course, Travolta's character's name. Lily gets nekkid, Travolta doesn't. There is a reason this isn't available on VHS.) 5. Gigli (J.Lo and B.Affle kidnap the retarded son of some public figure, and try to keep things on the down-low by parading him around town in a convertible. Pacino and Walken embarrass themselves in shrieking cameos. Turkey time ensues. Ben and Jen don't die at the end - is it too late for a rewrite?) [Edited 10/5/04 17:40pm]

Ex-Moderator | Poltergeist scared the crap out of me when I was little. And the Dark Crystal was super scary to me. But Poltergeist was the only scary "horror" movie I think I ever watched until I was about 16 or so. I got really, really scared by scary movies. I was the kid at slumber parties who had to sit upstairs with the mom while everyone was watching scary movies in the basement. I seriously couldn't take it. My parents used to have this Halloween sound effects record that had a scary ghost story on one side and all the sound effects on the other. I would get so scared when they'd put it on I'd run from the room crying and screaming.
That said, movies tend not to scare me too much anymore. I watched the Ring one night home alone and didn't really think much of it (though I've never seen the original.) And I have a friend who's a horror film nut so I get dragged along to see Freddy vs. Jason and Halloween Resurrection and the like, and none of those are scary to me. But weird things will creep me out sometimes. There was once some eel movie on cable that freaked me out and I made my dad change the channel. And I really can't take zombie movies. I was even a little freaked after seeing Shaun of the Dead alone the other day. And that's a comedy! |

Psycho
Evil Dead 1 Nightmare on Elm St 1 Exorcist The Omen All of the above picked because they scared the shit out of me as a youngster. I seriously find that i dont get "scared" by movies anymore. There can be sudden "frights" and "suspense" but not fear. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I don't really get scared much at all by horror movies, so I'll go for uneasy, dreading, nervous feeling:
The Last Starfighter Alien Seven Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the first one) Any Faces of Death movie for the sheer cheese factor.

The Exorcist - saw it when I was 11. I will NEVER watch it again. It's the only movie I've ever seen that scared me like that.
These other four were "fun" scary: 2. Poltergeist 3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the re-make) 4. The Entity 5. Halloween II - something about that hospital

I'm amazed at how many people cite Pet Semetary. That was one of the WORST horror films I've ever sat through. Not even slightly scary. Amazing, really, because it was one of King's BEST books. Oh well, to each his own.
For my tastes, I find films that are a tad bit realistic to be more frightening. The Silence Of The Lambs disturbed me, primarily because it could happen. I don't know if you call it a horror film, so I won't include it in my list though. My favorite horror films are probably these: Halloween Carpenter's masterpiece! Still creepy to this day, and utterly ripped-off time and again. Michael Myers was an incredibly creepy figure, and it still gives me chills when Laurie finds her friends bodies in the house (especially the shot with the tombstone on the bed). Alien "In space, no one can hear you scream"!! Ridley Scott managed to make a true sci-fi AND horror classic all at once. A Nightmare On Elm Street Remember when Freddy was actually scary? Sure, the acting is pretty bad, and the flick was low budget, but DAMN! It still managed to be creepy and suspenseful. Suspiria Classic Argento, all the way! Evil Dead Considering this was made with no budget, by a bunch of folks who'd never worked on a movie, its an incredible film I also have to give props to Kubrick's The Shining. As an adaptation, its terrible. It deviates incredibly from the book, and I understand why King wasn't too thrilled with it. That having been said, Kubrick does well with the screenplay he had to work with. The hotel seems vast, empty and threatening. The music is incredibly nerve-wracking and the cinematography is utterly disturbing. A truly scary flick.
