A techy question about DVDs....

Hi guys,

does anyone also know if DVD's that are region 1 USA NTSC playback will work on UK pal tvs, even if the DVD player is hacked or multi regional?

Im concerned, because the DVD info says "needs NTSC play back, region 1" for this dvd that I want from Amazon. U cant buy it here in the UK.

I have heard that dvds will play it, but not in colour. Is this true?

I really want this DVD! Also, will it therefore work on my laptop? Cant laptops read DVDs from anywhere? (its a european export model laptop bought from Japan).

Cheers,

Heavenly

It depends on the TV. Some TV's are multi system, meaning they can show both NTSC and PAL.
Here in Israel most items are multi system. and mutli regional too. So we rarely have problems playing any kind of DVDs, but in other places it's not as common.

you can get converters to plug between an NTSC DVD player to PAL tv's to correct the colour/flicker. hell if i know what they are called and where you can get hold of one. try yellow pages biggrin

it's not just sony vaios. most new laptops/comps come like that from the factory. Power DVD should be able to correct that thumbs up!

do you have a linux system just out of curiosity? you can do heaps of shit with one of those mediawise and the sofware is ALL FREE! (well 99% of it).

haven't got linux? i recommend SuSe if your new to linux (about $30 for a complete OS!) then download MPlayer ---> http://www.mplayerhq.hu/h.../info.html

if you have the HDD space, then it will happily run along side your current OS on a new partition (partition software included with linux!)

PAL and NTSC have different frame rates. NTSC is something like 29 frames per second, and PAL is a little less, I believe.

Computers are capable of displaying video at all sorts of different frame rates. A streaming Real Player video may only be at 10-15 frames per second, for example. So it should work on your computer, you might just have to adjust a few settings in the software you are using to play it.
