They can-but more often than not emotions and drama ruin it.
Best to have feelings known and clear. (What about with ? THAT'S difficult.)

we were platonic friends for 8 years... had planned that he would stand up for me at my wedding some day! was a definate hole in my life for a long time - but i'm better now!
it's been said before but i think friendship between the opposite sex works when they are either both single or both married. i don't necessarily blame the girlfriend - i probably would have acted the same if i was in that situation! and i won't see him again - he moved to ireland!

But.... I think, and it has been my experience, that in every friendship between a straight man and a straight woman there is a certain amount of sexual tension. It's all up to if, or how, you express those thoughts and desires. I always think " Just how complicated do you want this to get?", sometimes the chance of losing the friendship is just too great to go down that road. That's just my ditto. it gets complicated...i've been there. especially when it doesn't work out...one person can get really hurt. been there too. i still have faith though that one SHOULD fall in love with their best friend, personally i think that relationship would be beautiful and fulfilling. you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel
Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.
