Yes, I've noticed on my wage slips that I'm starting to pay it off. It's going to take me the rest of my life!

Glad im not alone ($15,000 plus intrest here) I really sympathise with you. If I realised the financial implications of going to university I would have thought twice about going. I regret to some extent not having a gap year and working before I started. Having said that, I wouldn't have met the wonderful friends that have I have now.

Often, but not always. The U.S. federal government's financial aid programs generally assume that parents will pay at least part of their children's undergraduate expenses, unless the student is married, over a certain age (24?), a veteran, or falls under another exception. So what if your parents aren't willing to contribute? Too bad for you. For a student enrolled in a graduate-level program (i.e., master's degree or higher), the government doesn't expect your parents to pay anything--you're automatically deemed "independent." Personally, the agreement I had with my parents was that they would pay for my bachelor's degree, and I would pay for any education beyond that. I went on to earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence (law) degree, which I funded mainly through student loans. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

My parents made too much money for me to qualify for aid and they wouldn't help me financially so I was on my own.
I was determined to get through school without loans because I HATE debt so I worked 2 jobs for much of college including nights at UPS because UPS would help with school ($1,500 a semester in tuition reimbursement) and struggled through. I'm not saying it was easy but after getting though a tough six years I have 3 degrees that I'm quite proud of because I earned them completely in every way.

Don't parents pay for their children's University expenses? Dude, can I borrow your parents for a few years? I was an in-state student at the University of Washington, so while I did have to take out loans for my last couple of years, it's not too bad. To my parents' credit, they told me growing up that I was on my own as far as college expenses, but I ended up starting when I was 16 and truly couldn't come up with the money myself, so they covered my first 2 years at a community college. I'm grateful for that.

Since the goverment is squeezed for money as well, I know alot of people recently who are being garnished for their wages, and have had their tax refund taken as well. It also goes on your credit report. I paid for my classes as I went. Don't like debt, paying off $5,000 in medical bills now and this is with insurance through my job!!! Now they have raised our deductible up from $250 to $1,000 before benefits even kick in!!!

took me FOREVER to pay off my loans, now I pay as I go, it's hard but at least I don't owe anyone. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou
