this is driving me nuts...STAR WARS question

just a quick background..I grew up with the IV, V and VI trilogy and have seen all 3 many times. I watch the new IV DVD last night and for the first time, I'm confused about the smallest issue! After Luke buys 3PO and R2 and then Kanobi rescues Luke from the sand people, and meets the droids for the first time....I thought he knew the droids in episodes I and II! Am I nuts???? Were the droids' memories' erased in III and we just don't "know" it yet? Is Kanobi PRETENDING not to know the droids for his cover?

Granted, I've only seen ep. I once (because I didn't like it) and EP II a few times and didn't really consider this when watching it. But I KNOW there are Star Wars experts on thh ORG so maybe you'd be kind enough to clear this up? PLease? Thanks!

this topic is actually much debated on theforce.net. most SW fans agree it'll probably (hopefully) be explained in Ep3.

one explanation is that there are gazillions of droids out there, and kenobi never did actually own them, so he may not remember them as the same ones that anakin had.

hey, it's possible, right?

Kenobi doesn't actually meet C-3PO in the first two movies. He may have met up with him after the battle at Geonosis but probably didn't pay much attention to him with the war starting and such. I'm sure they'll have more screentime together in ep III, though. And yes, there are many droids out there that look similar. For R2, he may have recognized him as possibly being the same droid from his previous experiences but probably dismissed it until he saw the message from Leia. I'm thinking that because 3PO is so much of a talker, his memory was more than likely wiped just so certain secrets could be kept. R2, on the other had, is a sneaky, kiniving little droid that can keep secrets, so his memory may have been left intact. On the other hand, it is standard procedure to have droids' memories wiped every so often. However, in the expanded universe, R2 and 3PO haven't been subjected to any memory wipes post-Empire.

Now I'm rambling. lol

yeah, i've heard it confirmed (supposedly) that 3PO does indeed get his memory wiped. otherwise he would have mentioned knowing kenobi himself. (after all, he is a talker.)

don't do it chewie!! don't put him back together!!

ok, i guess he was instrumental in much of the story . . .

sorry, a little threepio rage there. it's out of my system now. besides, he's not as bad as jarjar.

Obi Wan speaks the truth.

If you watch the movies carefully you'll notice that Obi-Wan barely crosses paths with R2-D2,
and he never meets C-3PO. He certainly never 'owned' them (or any other droids for that matter)

Episode I: R2 is on Queen Amidala's ship (along with several other R2 units) along with Obi-Wan
but they don't have any scenes together (except maybe when Padme congatulates R2, but it's
hardly something that Obi-Wan would remember). On Tatooine, Obi-Wan never leaves the ship
so he never meets C-3PO (who never leaves the planet).

Episode II: Again, R2 belongs to Padme Amidala and is only present in a couple of scenes when
Obi-Wan is around. They never interact. The only other time they are in the same place is in the
Geonosian arena, but there is so much going on that I doubt Obi-Wan would have even noticed
two droids on the fringes of the action.

Episode III: same as above. The droids tend to appear in Padme and Anakin's scenes
rather than when Obi-Wan is around.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It's the little things that drive me mad! razz

I thought LUKE did own the droids? You know, when he and his Uncle buy 3P0 and the first one which ends up being a lemon (For lack of better terms)...they end up taking R2...anyway, thanks again.

Luke does own the droids... (well Uncle Owen actually bought them, but since the Empire
turned him into toast, I think we can safely say he inherited them).

It hasn't... it comes out May 2005
(but I've seen and heard a lot about it already. It's the one I've been really waiting for
ever since Lucas announced he was gonna make the prequels)

what should be an issue is that about 20 years will pass between Episode 3 and 4...yet Ben Kenobi is well older than that age difference would allow.

since George Lucas went insane, I haven't been hyper at all about seeing any of the prequel movies...which both stunk, btw...
however...
I recently purchased the DVD trilogy...which includes a look at Ep.3 and Hayden Christensen as Darth...
gotta admit...looks good...

which reminds me..."Crazy George" did it again...
on the DVD of Return Of The Jedi...at the end, when everyone's celebrating and Luke looks out and sees Ben, Yoda, and Annakin...Annakin's been changed to appear as Hayden...
...that nutty, whacked-out George...what will he do next?

since "Crazy George" is talking about making the last 3 movies with the cast when they're all in their 60's and 70's, I've come up with the remaining titles for them...

Star Wars Episode VII: Naptime Of The Jedi
Star Wars Episode VIII: Wrath Of The Incontinence (thanks kendogg)
Star Wars Episode IX: The Alzheimer's Menace

nice try!!

he's thinking about making them, but the last three movies won't be about luke and leia and han. they'll be about han and leia's kids.

that was his original plan, to have three sets of movies that center on three different sets of characters, with the droids as the only ones in all three.

Yup, the TV series is go.
It's all very hush hush, but my money's on it being about the start of the rebellion, and set
between episodes III and IV, with virtually all new characters.

I'm still hoping for a final trilogy too, but it's definitely looking highly unlikely now.
Lucas has been going on record a lot recently saying he's not going to make them.
