Seriously, send it back and see what they say. Whatever you do, don't open it. I know that at least over here in Holland even after your warranty has expired you still have certain consumer rights which will compensate you for damages. If you have a 12 month warranty it doesn't mean you're completely on your own if your equipment to stops working properly after 13 months.

I don't know where you live, but you might have similar rights in your country.

stupid Dutchie typo edit

maybe the camera is haunted or possessed. or perhaps a disenfranchised genie set up shop inside the camera, after having been evicted from his bottle. i recommend that you try rubbing the camera then making a wish for it to repair itself

Could just be battery, focussing on zoom lenses takes a lot of power. Just a thought.

yeah, you do have rights (Sale of Goods Act etc.) but they're not the easiest thing in the world to rely on in reality. I agree that going to the manufacturer and getting them to have a look is sensible, but unless there was something fundamentally wrong with the camera when you bought it (which can, of course, come to light at a later date), you may have to face the repair charges and just bite the bullet.
