ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson YWCA lost $20,000 over the weekend on a Sha Na Na concert fund-raiser, and the organization's leaders say they might have to cut staff or face closing.

Organizers had hoped 2,000 would show up for Saturday's concert at $20 a ticket to see the 1950s revival group, but only 289 attended, YWCA board President Connie Smith said.

"During the Sha Na Na concert, the board was in the popcorn room saying, 'What can we do?' " Smith told The Herald Bulletin newspaper.

"I feel stupid and mad. Sha Na Na was at Woodstock, for Pete's sake. Why wasn't anyone interested?"

After a board meeting Monday, Smith said members were resolved to keep the facility open and plan to meet again Thursday.

"We know we have to cut staff," she said. "It's a hard decision."

The YWCA has two full-time employees and several part-time employees, including about nine swimming pool lifeguards.

"We paid $4,000 in bills and that's not including Sha Na Na," she said. "We hope Sha Na Na will get their money."

The Anderson YWCA has been struggling for several years. It closed for several months in 2002 because of mounting bills.

Dude, that has to be from the Onion!

Who in their right mind would expect 2,000 people to show up? On top of that expect them to pay 20 snaps to see those geezers?

I think some changes need to be made in management.

But REALLY...are there THAT many fans of Sha Na Na in Anderson, Indiana (I shudder at the answer!) and can those fans afford 20 bucks a pop? And still have money left over for their meth? kidding.

But the REAL question is if this was a fund raiser...why wouldn't Sha na na play for free?
