I'm just devastated. Coyotes got in my yard yesterday during the day and got to her. I am just so sick inside. Being a single mom you feel the head of household responsibility. So I feel like I failed to protect her. The children and I cried till we can't anymore. Now my dads here to help me....

I know you feel responsible, but its not your fault. You can't be everywhere all the time. I would be devestated as well. I've got two dogs of my own, and I can't imagine something like this happening to them.

i'm so sorry muse. my folks just had to put our old dog to sleep and that was hard enuf. but to come home and find it like you did, i truly sympathize with you.

They run in my neighborhood too, and no one has "outdoor" cats anymore. It's sad - but they are just hungry and come down fromthe foothills looking for food and water... Still, I know I'd be devastated if one got a pet of mine.

Fucking Coyotes, they're like vultures. I used to get them in my yard too and I was horrified. I know you must be devastated...and I only hope you weren't there to witness it or hear it. I hope you and your children heal quickly...perhaps you can get your yard fenced in if you get another dog? I think coyotes should be shot until distinction. They're good for nothing.

I am so sorry, Muse... I understand completely that feeling that your pet is part of the family, a family you feel is your responsibility to care for and protect. I hope your kids are dealing with the situation well...that's one extraordinarily tough lesson for them to learn about nature. *sigh*

Last winter a lynx took my friends dog

if i were you (and im not being coy here), id watch a shitload of road-runner cartoons right now. watching that coyote get the shit blown out of him and dropped off of cliffs would cheer me up a little bit. i know it may sound stupid, but thats just how i deal with shit like that. fucking coyotes!

Unfortunately, they coyotes who've learned that there's easy prey in some yards, will keep coming back to the inhabitated areas cos the pets are like a smorgasbord to them, why work for your food if it's there free for the taking? It's more difficult with the canine species because they are herd/flock animals, with a lynx if you kill the offending lynx you get rid of the problem but it's very hard to kill an entire family of coyotes, chances are there'll be at least one to show the others the way.

Muse, you have reported this to the authorities, right?? I know you mentioned talking to the Humane Society about it, but my thinking is this: how long until this happens to someone's kid??? When that happens, I guarantee action will be taken, but it will be too late.

Also fruit trees and especially those who have hanging vines over the fences draw them in. I have fig vines covering all my fences.. That they often fall creating tunnels where they may actually nest and live.... Ours fell creating a tunnel earlier this year. I left it as Felicia loved running down through it like a dog run and it gave her a cool spot ..... Mind you I live in a track with high fences all the way around. I am so in shock. I adored our little girl!

Heres another fact. Sympathizers are actually FEEDING them. The humane society said that with people feeding them they are becoming a part of our neighborhoods.

So they don't feel so comfortable around humans. They have made a formal report to The City and also another to a activist society that will push the city to trap if it appears that they have a greater risk problem growing. I inquired about the kid thing over and over..... As it were traditionally they will not take interest but they advise small children are not left alone. Mind you this all said I am in the center of a bedroom community not a rural area. I just didn't see it as an issue for the area as a city dweller...
