Default Media Player

Ok,this might be a stupid question .
but i can't seem to find the answer myself
How do i make "Windows media player" the default player ?

(I recently downloaded "Quick time player"
and every time i wanna play a (short video) file
it gets played in that instead of "Windows media player")

If you have several programs installed like Real Player, and Quicktime, in addition to Windows Media Player, you should go through the options in those programs and disable them as the default players for various media files.

Otherwise they will all keep reclaiming file type associations in an annoying tug of war for dominance.

Then, one by one, right click on each file type you want to associate with Windows Media Player, and choose "Open With" and select "Choose Program". Then select Windows Media Player from the list and make sure the "Always use selected program..." option is checked.

You have to do this once for each file type you want to open with Windows Media Player. So do this once with an Mp3, Once with an Mpeg, Once with an AVI, etc....

You can also change file type associations by going to your control panel, choosing Folder Options, and clicking the "File Types" tab, then scroll through the list and change whatever ones you want. Using this method, you can even change the icon that displays for that file type as well.

In some cases, even though you're telling it to open with Windows Media Player for example, you may still see the Real Player icon on those file types, which can be annoying and confusing. You would have to adjust the settings within Folder Options to correct this. Then Reboot for it all to take effect.
