Parts of Jobs you hate - Firing people

I have only been in my job for a month and I have to write a report that may result in other people being fired. I am finding it hard to be positive about them because they probably should be fired, but how can you do that to people?

Anyone else have to fire people?

at my old job I was the one who did all the firing and hiring, I got to do all the dirty work, if I knew someone deserved it then I really didnt have a problem with it, I felt bad but what can you do, but if it the firing call came from the higher ups, I had a problem doing it, I just felt like I was firing someone for reasons I wasnt sure about.

Thats my problem, what can you do? Often times its's not their fault but their unfirable line managers. It also seems just to revolve around money too, "can we do without them" and save a few grand. Strange!!

I've had to do it...both when I was manager at Little Caesar's Pizza and when I owned my own business for about 7 years...and no, it's never easy or pleasant. neutral

The only thing that made it tolerable was keeping strict paperwork on their conduct and transgressions, on all the warnings and such...so that when it came time to fire them, I could remind them of these things, basically saying "You had to have seen this coming...how many times can I warn you to correct these problems?"...Still, though, seeing their face..*sigh*...it's not fun. sad

No, but my dad has had to do it twice in 21 years, and I don't think he's enjoyed it at all. Both times, he gave the employee the option of resigning to allow him/her to save face.

biggrin None taken but if someone in your family has all their life savings taken by some stockbroker who rips them off, I think that you would want them to at least get fired for it. You should see the smile on my face when I let one of those crooked bastards go.

In my last job (American Express Financial Advisors) I didn't have the authority to fire people although I basically was to do all the reporting which led to terminations.

But, in my last year there, the company went through a huge restructuring and my department's work was in the process of being "outsourced." (Moved to India in other words.) So, over the course of my last 9 months there, I watched as my department was wittled down from 40+ people to 8 people (when I quit). This was through a combination of layoffs and terminations.

Eventually, it got easier as people knew it was coming. But the 1st round of layoffs, I had to help with the meeting when for people were told they were being let go. One of these people was a mom with 6 children. She had been in an abusive relationship her whole adult life. Her job at Amex helped her have the resources and courage to finally leave the asshole. And I had to help tell her she no longer had this job that in some ways 'saved her.'

sigh it was one of the worst things I experienced in my 4 years with that company.
