Ash to take on Freddy and Jason Okay folks, this just got interesting. Looks like Ash from The Evil Dead Trilogy (ED, ED2: Dead By Dawn and Army Of Darkness), might be taking on those big gorillas from the horror world: Freddy And Jason.
This is from Aint It Cool News: Ash's team fighting to get him to kick the bejeesus out of Freddy & Jason!
Hey folks, Harry here... Tomorrow you'll find out that Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell are in the thick of negotiations to have ASH kick the living shit out FREDDY and JASON. Now, we all know they've been talking about it since way the hell back when FREDDY VS JASON came out, but they've continued to work on getting this thing to happen. Why? Well, as you have probably noticed... Bruce Campbell is beginning to catch on. The feeling is, that by having Ash kick the shit out of Freddy and Jason... not only will the character of ASH be spring-boarded into the mainstream by those two Horror mainstays, but will be popular enough to risk sinking major money and promotion into an ASH stand-alone film. I know... geek wet dream material, but let's face it... the only way Sam Raimi would get back to directing ASH instead of wasting his time on these little films for Sony, is if ASH can be held in a higher esteem. At least, that's what the folks at CAA are whispering. Now is the deal done? No, but it's getting close... the negotiations have turned quite friendly and everyone involved thinks this is a doable deal... that's why the trades are going to go ahead with the "in negotiations" story which is like the biggest "NO SHIT" I've seen in a long time. Raimi and crew seem to be high on the treatment coming out of New Line, but as soon as the deal gets worked out, the next step of banging the script out, finding the right director (NOT PAUL W.S. ANDERSON) and then picking the right selection of potential redmeat for everyone to chop up, possess, squish, pummel, bite, eat, saw and all around slaughter will have to begin. It just has to have a badass S-MART battle. Ya know... if they don't fuck this up ala Fox, this could be the great geekgasm mop the floors flick of 2005 or 2006. Ya better believe we'll continue to twist arms and step on the appropriate ballsacks to get the nitty gritty on this baby. What I particularly like about this concept for a movie is that so far... Freddy & Jason have been the stars of their films, with nobody on an equal footing to really combat their evilness. ASH... is in many ways the only honest to goodness Horror HERO. And I mean that in the cult film variety that has the geek cred to take those fuckers on. They're both child murderers... and that kinda pisses me off, I mean... Seeing Ash punish those fucks for 8 hours is kinda on my... gotta see list. Besides just hearing Ash quip shit to Freddy... will be heaven. Ya know? I'm in geek heaven!! All I care about is seeing Ash on the big screen again!!! Freddy and Jason don't stand a chance! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Ash or Freddy is no match for the almighty Jason and his trusty Machete....Bring it on.

I'd LOVE to see this happen-I'm a huge fan of all these films, especially Bruce's work and the Evil Dead series-I'm just skeptical because Bruce hasn't seemed that eager to do it from interviews I've read with him. If Bruce changes his mind and realizes this could be a ticket to stardom and to really help his family (seems to be one of the main reasons in my mind he'd do this)-I'd love it.
This really is geek heaven-hopefully they'll do this instead of some of the more obvious match-ups and this would just slaughter everyone else at the box office. 3 built-in fan bases and we all know Ash would mop the floor with them, there's no way Bruce and Sam would ever let the Ash character just be a lackey. We can only hope this doesn't end up in development hell-like Freddy vs. Jason was. I'm really excited, I just hope it doesn't fall through like so many great ideas seem to in the film world.

Bruce didn't seem eager at first, but I think he's starting to come around to the idea. Like you said, he's seeing the possibilities, especially that this could springboard Ash into his own films again (this time, with budgets!) Bruce is way too talented to linger in obscurity forever. Besides, I WANNA SEE ASH KICKING THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF FREDDY AND JASON. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan; retails for about one hundred nine, ninety-five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right, shop smart, shop S-Mart!

If the plans go through...I just hope it doesn't suck like Freddy vs. Jason. You're right about that. Mikey would kick some tail. Halloween is one of my favorite movies of all time! I also enjoy the Friday the 13th and NoES series on some level, but wasn't too hot on Freddy vs Jason. Adding Ash to the mix seems even more ridiculous. It smacks of greed and bandwagon jumping. Silly, silly idea. If they add Abbot and Costello, I might reconsider.

Silly, silly idea. If they add Abbot and Costello, I might reconsider. Oh c'mon! Its not like Ash is a household name here! How can it be about greed? If that were the case, don't you think they'd go for a more recognizable character like Leatherface or Pinhead? Fact is, the Nightmare and Friday series had both degenerated into parodies of themselves LONG ago. At least Freddy Vs Jason had some fun with what was a totally ridiculous premise to begin with. Adding Ash to the mix will up that ante quite considerably. How long has Freddy been making bad one-liners? oh, since the second friggin film! Put him up against the smart-assed hero of the Evil Dead trilogy, and it can't be anything but fun. You want serious horror? None of those franchises have been that in quite a while. As for adding Mike Myers to the mix, no. Halloween is a brilliant film, and I'm sick of seeing all these gawd-awful sequels. Leave Mikey dead (which, as far as I'm concerned, he has been for a long time. Shit like Halloween: Resurrection I just ignore). Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I didn't say add Myers to the mix - I just said he'd kick their asses And yes, another one of these sequels is about greed. I'm not commenting on Ash's popularity or lack thereof. Obviously, the film industry is an industry and industry is concerned about making money. The only reason they're making one of these is because Freddy vs Jason did well at the boxoffice (its first week anyway, then it dropped significantly).
Since they're limited to a few of these horror villians (the ones in New Line's canon and others they'd be able to negotiate), I just think it's desperation that leads them to it. Freddy vs Jason was supposed to happen long ago, and the end result of that first try was Friday the 13th: The New Blood - one of, if not the worst of the F13 lot. They shoulda stopped with the versus nonsense then. I'll admit that parts of it worked in FvJ, but on the whole it didn't amount to much.

I'm a tad bit protective of Halloween, since its been abused worse than all of them. It was the best of all of the original films, but it had the shittiest sequels. Hell, at least the Friday & Nightmare movies had some laughs with their terrible sequels. Poor Halloween got garbage like H:Resurrection and the "what the fuck did that have to do with Halloween" Season Of The Witch. I watch the original every October, because it just isn't the season without it, but you can flush most of the rest down the toilet for all I care. I personally enjoyed the snot out of FvsJ. Yes, it was silly as all get out, but I didn't mind that. Those movies had become jokes long ago, and I thought it did a good job of taking a stupid idea and making it entertaining. I'm fully expecting FvJvA to be even more over the top (I'd be upset if it wasn't). All I really care about is Ash returning to the big screen. If he's gotta beat the living shit outta those paintywaists, Freddy and Jason, just to get his series revived, then I say BRING IT ON!!! Did you miss the part where I said Halloween is one of my favorite films (if not my absolute favorite)? I don't think all its sequels were crap (Halloween II and H20 were alright), but the latter half of the series has been shit. It annoys me that it gets lumped it with the rest of the crap slasher lot (again, though I enjoy them on some level), because it's a lot better than them. It has only itself to blame, because of all the inferior sequels.

Sure, it'd be more logical to pick Michael Myers or Pinhead, but it doesn't mean if Ash is in it there won't be a chance other characters would be in a later film. Hopefully people that are mad about it realize this doesn't sound like it'd be the last one. This IS looking to be a franchise after all. "Shop smart, shop S-Mart."

Even those are far inferior to the original, but at least they form an arc that makes some semblance of sense. To me, that is the Halloween trilogy. I refuse to accept the others. I totally agree with Halloween being lumped in with the other flicks (which is another reason I balked when I thought you were suggesting they put Myers into the mix). To me (even though I enjoy some of the slasher flicks) Halloween is heads above all the others. Hell, Jason is just a pale imitation of Myers for the first four films or so. The original is a piece of true film art, showing how brilliant Carpenter could really be. Shame he didn't come back for H2O (although he did give his blessing to the script). To me, he never shined brighter that he did on this film. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones.
