Independence day/Harvey is a good example. Huge movie with the gay male stereotype. In the script I'll bet it called for "Gay male"...just adding a demographic. I feel though everyone in that movie did it for the money. No one's carreer did very well after except Will Smith. I was actually disappointed in Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum for taking on such low brow roles. I feel the Harvey character could have been played by anyone. Actually all of that guys movies um...need little brain cell activity to watch.

We are a demographic now. It's much easier to be gay now that it was before. People are coming out all over the place slowly...but still coming to terms that being gay isn't bad, no matter what those Priests tell ya wink I believe there are many people that are gay and either don't "know " it or are closeted. I think it was harder in the past for actors like Lily to keep their sexuality to themselves. We all knew...but it was just whispered amonst the gay community. Come on, I can still list about 15 or more celebrities that are probably gay but won't come out due to how much it'll hurt their carreer. I think the world would do a double take if they knew how gay hollywood actually is.

I disagree. Characters in sitcoms are stereotypically dumb. No real differences between "gay" or "straight" shows. I even think it's a good sign; it seems like ppl think: hey! gay ppl are just as normal as straight, so let's make the same unintelligent shows...

I agree with this. Jack and Karen are the vaudevillian act, the stooges on W&G and they are great at it. That's why we love them. W&G are the straight men, they have the wittier stuff.

I love W&G and I think Will is a great character. So, no, I don't think we're being "dumbed" down. I mean, shit, most television is usually pretty dumb anyway if u have to look at it like that. W&G is pretty much the only show I even watch on network TV anymore. Aside from a few really good shows, it's all basically crap, ESPECIALLY the sitcoms.

My 2 pennies.

In Holland alot of the so called walls have tumbled; our rights are level with straight people. We can marry, adopt and have every advantage straight people have.

in fact they are not really all.

adoption is not the same for homosexuals as it is for heterosexuals.

and the thing that upsets me still is the fact that homosexuals cannot give blood or organs.
if they find out you are homosexual, they won't accept it.

On a side-note: isn't it time to replace the word "straight" ? It implicates hetero's are normal and thus through association, gays are not.
It's commonplace to use "hetero" in Holland.

Thanks for all of this insightful comments...and for not relegating this topic to that of Paris Hiltons dog thumbs up!

I had seen a Graham Norton show and it was making me a little mad...and this was more of a vent...something I have been thinking about for a while now. I am glad I am not alone on this. I think we have many obsticles to overcome still but compared to 10-15 years ago...we come in long strides.

Re: QAF: I've seen close to every episode. I think there's good and bad to be found in it. True, most of the characters are portrayed as promiscuous, but on the other hand, they are also portrayed as individuals. And does everyone but me miss the pre-show disclaimer that says "Queer As Folk is meant to be a portrayal of a group of friends, but is not meant as a representation of all aspects of gay life." (or something to that effect.)

On the topic of gays being the hip, new "subculture" of the minute: I have a friend who refers to it as "modern-day minstrelry". In his words, "They put us on a pedestal and parade us around in all our safest, shiniest stereotypes."

I now want to discuss Kylie Minogue's eyeshadow. And Cher's sense of style.

hehehe. This happened to me when watching the deciding soccer match in the half finals of the European championship. I had to laugh, but the two people (hetero's) that really wanted to watch were really taken aback.
One of them took it as a sport, he said; at least I have something FUNNY to tell my colleagues tomorrow.

Hehehe. After the game, we turned the music up and danced. To Franz Ferdinand.
