A Clockwork Orange

I saw it for the first time yesterday and it was brilliant. Malcolm McDowell was great in his role (Though I forget his name in the movie). It's up there with Full Metal Jacket as one of my favorite Kubrick films. I've seen "The Shining" but can anyone recommend other Kubrick directed films?

Lolita is brillaint. One of the few love stories with any kind of believability. I also loved The Shining and adored Eyes Wide Shut

It's an obvious choice, I suppose, but I think that Dr. Strangelove is the definitive Kubrick film. Somehow, I've managed to never see Lolita - I've looked at it a few times when I browse through the Criterion Collection at my local video store. I guess I'll rent it this weekend.

Can't spell...

Forgive me but 2001: A Space Odyssey was way too strange for me especially the last part of the movie. I never got into it although I wanted to.

A Clockwork Orange is definitely one of my favorites-you can't watch it easily, it's definitely meant to unnerve you. Also best with a big glass of milk.

Malcolm McDowell I think is very underrated in this, and as an actor as a whole-it's a strange film but it's not purely a mindfuck for the sake of it.

Eyes Wide Shut I couldn't get into quite as much-maybe if it was unknowns it would've been easier to get into. I usually enjoy Tom and Nicole's work but they didn't seem to be acting all that much here, it seemed to focus on the camera more than the story.

Dr. Strangelove I like in many of the same ways as Clockwork Orange-that same chaos, almost guerilla filmmaking. I think you can see influences from both these films in the way more modern films like Natural Born Killers were made and of course Terry Gilliam's work I always saw a Kubrick influence.

The Shining is a classic. That's one of my favorite Jack performances right there.

Anybody have any opinions on A.I. since Kubrick intended to do that but Spielberg was trusted with it/made it in his memory? I had a hard time getting into it, aside from the part with Ministry, but it never seemed to flow, and dragged on.

I liked it. It was a good tribute to Kubrick if that's what Spielberg wanted.

The funny thing is I think some of those that were rated X back in the day could now be considered pretty tame compared to the hard R's we have out now-and now with unrated editions, I keep wondering if back then they didn't base it as much as content as in controversy.

Oh, like anyone would ever do that. lol

Exactly look at Darling NIKKI. That was so Bad? Come Now... Ya Know something I Totally Understand Mr Man Princey-Poo now. I Got him... LOL....Lol.. I Totally Understand where he's coming from. Anyway, It's true Look at FRITZ THE CAT Rated X??? For an Animated Cat Movie or for the Drugs? How about Heavy Metal? I Can see Caligula cause it's Very Graphic but Not Like Fritz or Midnight Cowboy? Maybe Content is why. Just think of the scenes cut out of Purple Rain. Eyes was a Fetish Film. Lots of People Hated it. I just Love it though... Ya know what movie is Weird actually 2 are WEIRD...JACOBS Ladder and ALTERED STATES...???

Try and see them all if you can. Kubrick is a rarity in that he's responsible for a diverse number of films. Along with the films already mentioned herein this thread, don't forget Spartacus of course. Although his output was never prolific, it is consistently interesting and provocative.

Very true. I saw Heavy Metal years ago and I never really understood the big controversy. Animation should be in a completely different category when it comes to nudity or violence. Japanese animation is more along the lines of the harder edge, but something like AKIRA isn't going to make someone go out and commit a murder.

A movie like Caligula of course is very graphic like you said, and I get that, but how is something like Jacob's Ladder considered that offensive? It's not sexual for the sake of being sexual.

The whole Darling Nikki thing-don't even get me started on the PMRC and the record ratings that have been in effect for years and never really worked.. Especially the hypocrisy you see at Wal-Mart. They sell only edited versions if it had a parental advisory (which since their introduction have almost guaranteed an extra million albums sold for the more major artists), but in the next section over you have movies like Pulp Fiction in stock. I even saw the Bad Santa: Unrated Version there!

I understand wanting to "protect" underage kids from seeing stuff they shouldn't, but it makes no sense to have an age limit on buying movies but you don't have the option to buy an album that includes the f-word.

Makes you wonder what A Clockwork Orange would be rated if it was released now-might even only be allowed in limited release art-houses.

I like bold edit.

I can't believe nobody mentioned 2001, one of the most brilliant cinematic masterpieces ever made.

In today's computer-aided world, I still have no clue how he created those space environments. The f/x haven't aged a bit.

Dr. Strangelove for sure as well.

Sometimes watching Kubrick's films, you know what you're seeing is amazing and awe-inspiring, but you have trouble understanding how. He had such a unique voice and approach to cinema. I don't think any succesful director of today could match his originality, though there are some pretty amazing ones out there.

If Kubrick was alive to direct a Charlie Kauffman script? Damn, that would blow my mind. smile

I was in the video store today and almost picked it up. I went with a Japanese movie instead called, "Battle Royale". I think I'll try Dr. Strangelove and Lolita first. Going through the earlier works first is probably the best way for me to start.
