"Geeky Computer Help Time" Part II

OK, I'm having issues with my PC too, and maybe someone will notice the symptoms and know what to do...

SO. I'm having a lot of trouble using my CD burner lately and here's what I think happened:

A few days ago, my PC was getting downright besotted by pop-ups and spammy crap and shitty spam software that was installing itself on my computer, and so I got fed up and ran my SEARCH & DESTROY software, which detects all the spyware/adbot/crapware stuff and deletes it.

Okay.

So, I think somehow, some important CD burner driver type stuff got lumped in with the crappy crap detected by my Search & Destroy program, and as a result, I can't use the CD burner on my PC. On both RealPlayer and Windows Media Player, it's taking FOREVER for me to burn a single song, and I tried to make a CD comp with the generic RecordNow software that came with my PC, and I wound up with a horrible sounding messed-up CD-R...and now it'll hardly copy a CD without my PC throwing a shitfit and me having to reboot.

What I would *LIKE* to do is find some way to troubleshoot my CD burner and hopefully replace what might have gotten deleted...or if I somehow screwed up some settings, figure out what settings I need to get things right again. It could be that I just inadvertantly changed the quality settings that make the burning speed go extra slow, but I futzed with my settings enough recently that I don't think that's the case...but I really dunno. sigh

So that's my problem and it sucks. mad

Is your cd code updated with all the latest licenses?

If not run a "drive sweep" program, something like Disc-Medic (use version 9 or there's no point)

Magnetize the data packets as they resdistribute around your memory links and then just reboot (watch your power strip backflow!)

MrJoker

Try reinstalling the burning software which should also refresh the driver for the burner. Otherwise, you may want to try going back using System Restore if you're using XP.

Something you may want to do at some point: get the program Alcohol 120% and use that as your burning software. Another option is Nero. smile

so like with realplayer and windows media, i should just go to the sites and act like i'm installing them over again? should i delete what i already have and start from scratch, or just overwrite what i already have, or does it even matter one way or another?

Being it's a problem with both Media Player and Realplayer, it's probably not a problem with them but rather an issue with your burner driver. If you don't have software specifically for your burner, then I'd look for the CD burner manufacturer's website and download the proper driver which may in fact be a better version than the one you have. You wouldn't have to delete what you have for this, just install over the previous version.

Hmmmm, my CD burner came with my PC, so I guess I'd just go to the Compaq web site and futz around there or something.

Thanks for the advice - all joking aside, it's really helpful. nod

If you don't find anything on the Compaq website, go into Control Panel, then System, then Device Manager and check in there for the CD drive's manufacturer's name (which won't be Compaq). This is the manufacturer's website to visit in order to get the driver. The name should also appear when booting up as it identifies each drive.

There's a bunch of free CD buring software at

http://www.snapfiles.com/...dburn.html

I've installed DeepBurner on machines before, and it worked fine. It's very similar to Nero, only free. smile

I've never heard of any spyware or adware interfering with or exploiting CD burning software. But if there was anything in the program you were using that "phoned home" for product updates or stuff like that, it may have accidentally got flagged as spyware.

You could go hunt for a copy of Nero, but that program has become just as bloated with useless features as Easy CD Creator did. And a large majority of the software on P2P has viruses/trojans.

There's a large majority of programs that don't have viruses/trojans as well... not that I'd know anything about that. wink lol

Thanks for the info as well Tom. I've been having the same problem as Anxiety with my cd burner-Easy CD Creator-after running Spybot and Ad-Aware. Downloading DeepBurner now.

thumbs up!
