well, since the health hazards have already been addressed so nicely by lolly, might i add that i hope she hasn't been doing this throughout her pregnancy (without even getting into what smoking will do to a newborn)...

but let's say we give her the benefit of the doubt:

maybe she's totally she's frustrated at being in her last month (it's a rough one, believe me) and just can't take it anymore. maybe she's hoping a slightly hostile environment will motivate him to push himself on out! or maybe she just doesn't give a damn anymore...

people get desperate in that last month, especially on moving into a 10th month (which happens in almost 1/2 of pregnancies). some jump, go on bouncy car rides and do other crazy things that will go unmentioned in order to get that baby out...

or perhaps she's getting really stressed, and is trying to calm herself down by going back to an old habit. and hopefully not seriously inhaling! but really... maternal stress has a bad effect on babies too.

I have very mixed emotions on this...

When my mom was pregnant with me and my sister back in 1967 and 1976, she smoked through her whole pregnancy with both of us.. I know a lot of people who smoked back in the day wihen they were preganant and all of their children turned out perfectly fine.. We were slightly light kids (I was 6 lbs 12 oz) and my sister was 6lbs 11 oz, but hardly premature or tiny babies..

Now since there are all these talks about smoking while pregnant, of course people are up in arms about it.. All the possibilites of problems happening.. The media thrives on this attention esepcially with celebrities..

I am tossed with my opinion on this.. I guess its up to the person to do what they want.. I dont recommend chain smoking while pregnant, but if your gonna have an occasional cigarette i guess to each his own.

Drinking, well that on the other hand.. i view differently, BUT, I am not going to speculate what is in her little red cup....

Well honestly.. I don't think it's child abuse per say, but it's shameful in the least.

I was in Vegas a few years ago, and I was in the Golden Nugget casino. I look next to me and there is this absolutely beautiful woman who looks to be about ready to pop.... seriously like 8 months along or so. We get to chatting and she pulls out a smoke... I was a little surprised, but then she orders herself a shot of Tequila and a beer.... I KID YOU NOT! shake SAD!!! I gave her my unhappy face and told her good luck and bounced....

I am a smoker, when I found out I was pregnant I quit, which was extremely hard to do, my child was premature 3 months, whish wasnt from my previous habit it just was one of those things, I started smoking again after she was born, she has to be in the hospital for 1 1/2 months after I had to be discharged, it was one of the worse situations I had to go through.

I continued smoking, I dont smoke in the house, in tha car or even when I have her. I will step outside when she is taking a nap or is asleep for the night, she didnt have any respitory problems when she was born ad I dont want to her have them because of one of my problems.
She had a hard enough time struggling in th NICU. All she deserves is the best.

The warning labels usually indicate that the could be harmful to pregnant women and cause birth defects. I knew a girl who would smoke while pregnant and w2hen I'd ask why do you do that she said her mom smoked while pregnant with her and she came out fine.

My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me too and drank like a fish from what i hear.....

but there was not the same ammount of evidence back then to provide a good case agains't smoking while pregnant.

I was born with a heart Murmer and valve defect and was always one of the small kids, I later developed asthma. Now these would have probably happened anyway but i would never ever smoke while pregnant (i don't smoke anyway) or drink.

I think saying you smoke while pregnant cause your mom did and your fine is just an attempt to stop the person feeling guilty about the fact they may be harming there child.

I would also like to add that more expectant fathers should be encouraged to give up smoking too, as passive smoking is being shown to be more dangerous the more research is done.

first off i want to say that i don;t agree with women smoking at any time during their pregnancy.

That being said, isn't the negative impact of smoking and drinking during pregnancy the strongest during the first trimester, when the fetus is developing the quickest? By the 8th or 9th month you;re basically carrying around a full grown newborn. just wondering.

with most drugs the first 3 months are the most damaging but smoking is entirly differnt smoking effects fully grown adults causeing cancer and cell mutations

think of the effect that will have on a unborn baby at no matter what stage it is at.

No, certain stages of growth are in each month, or in trimester, in the last trimester the lungs develop and the hearing and skin develop, I am not going to say one part of development is more important than the other shrug

sorry i wasn't clear

if it can effect adults with much slower cell division and growth and repair.....

You can see how damaging it could be to a unborn child who's cells are rapidly dividing.

hmmmm i think you misinterperated what i wrote
