The Believer magazine

Am I the only one who reads this magazine?

It's a very cool read, even if it's a tad expensive at eight bucks an issue and sometimes it gets a little too eggheaded for its own good. It's published by McSweeney's Press, which is owned by Dave Eggers, who wrote "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" and "You Shall Know Our Velocity"...the reason the price is so steep is cuz there's absolutely NO advertising in the magazine, and it's printed on nice, thick paper with full, rich color on every page. It's beautiful just to flip through...and every issue ya get illustrations by Tony Millionaire and a monthly book review column by Nick Hornby, and on a good month you'll get some cool interviews...my favorites thus far being stories about ?uestlove, David Byrne and Amy Sedaris.

If you ever get a chance to flip through an issue, do so - it's great travel reading, cuz the articles are looooong. Or you can just check out the web site: www.believermag.com

Good stuff. thumbs up!

the new issue has some story about how the behavior of minnesotans is being used as the standard of normalcy for job applicants across the country (i think that's what it's about, anyway). i'm scared o' that! wink

Now that's just crazy talk! If the people I know are any indication, Minnesotans are FREAKS!

here's what the story is:

Invasion of the Minnesota Normals
Annie Murphy Paul
A personality test that used Minnesotans as its benchmark
for normalcy is becoming corporate America's key to picking loyal employees.

omfg That's just so, weird. And big brotherish. I hate those personality tests for jobs. It's so easy to tell what the "right" answers are, but I feel like I'm not being completey myself cause I always answer with what they're looking for and not necessarily what matches me best... confused

i'll letcha know what the story's all about once i read it...but the believer is good at publishing kooky stuff like this, usually from a really entertaining perspective.

if anyone lives in NYC, they should go to the mcsweeney's shop in park slope, i think it's around 7th ave and 7th street (and while you're in the area, go to QUADE flower shop on 7th ave. and 5th st. because it's a totally cool/weird flower shop and it's owned by my former roommate!!) - the mcsweeney's shop has a bunch of cool shit and it's owned by the folks who publish mcsweeney's, and it's one of the most bizarre experiences you'll ever have in a retail setting, like ever.

Don't even want to think about what it will cost here in The Netherlands.

Flaunt magazine is 12 euro's here! Ever since the euro was introduced, magazines became waaaay more expensive, esp the US ones.

See, I have this book and when I read the very first story/chapter, I loved it and was sooooo excited to read the rest of the book. But sadly, it went downhill from there. I remember thinking, "what an asshole"! I kept hoping and hoping it would get better and did actually finish the book, looking for more of the genius of the first article, but to no avail. When I got done I couldn't help but think about how much I would NOT like this this guy if I met him in person. So yeah, officially, I hate the guy, except for the one article and maybe a sentence or two here and there elsewhere.
