Super Glue good for Cuts?

I was attempting to open a bottle of Roses Lime Juice today, using a knife to break the seal... and, the knife broke through it more easily than expected (it usually doesn't work that well) and jabbed right into my finger.

It's pretty deep (you can see my bone, as well as the fat underneath my skin. It's only about an inch in length. You should have seen all the blood! eek Who knew a finger could bleed so much and so quickly! Sooo...

I really don't wanna go in and get stitches, but was told by two people that I can use Super Glue to adhere the skin together so that it heals properly.

Anyone know if this is true or not?

i would strongly advise against this...1st off, super glue is toxic....there is glue available for wounds, we use it at the hospital...but i doubt u could get access to it over the counter.

secondly, even if you did stick your wound together, there will b no time for your wound to get to the granulation / maturation stage ...it may become septic...and you dont want that...so get your ass to the doctor and tell him to infiltrate some bupivicaine hydrochloride into that shit...it wont hurt trust me wink i've done it to many people...not stab them...stitch them up biggrin

That made me feel a little stupid. lol

Ugh... but then I have to wait in line and then have to pay them to stitch me up. How about something I can do over the counter. Do I need to hold the skin together for it to heal properly, instead of letting it sort of spread out? Like... if I were to wrap a band-aid tightly around it to pull it together?

I don't wanna go to the doctor. sad

(Thank you for your advice, though... really. I just really don't want to go).

That's a silly myth.

Try stapling it together.

One time I slipped coming out of the shower and fell into the tracking of the shower door, putting a huge gash in my back. I was the same way, refused to go to the doctor to get stitches. So I had my mom disinfect it (which hurt like a mofo) and pull it shut with surgical tape. It healed, but I have a noticeable scar.

if you can see bone then i would strongly recommend going to the doctor...infection in the bone is a bastard to treat...and the possibility of amputation if the bone becomes infected is high...

...if you have the following at home then DONT goto the doctor:

- 2/0 Monocryl sutures
- BP Handle w/ 10 blade
- skin hooks
- 10mls of Marcain (0.5%)
- Gentomicin
- mepore dressing
- extra set of hands

...i take it you dont have these items nod

...so get to the doc.

OUCH! That sounds waaay painful! Be careful coming out of the shower, you!

Scaring is fine... I just don't want the fat junk that I can see to butterfly open and be exposed. But, I also don't want to get infection in there either. And, I really don't want to go to the doctor.

Ardeo: Should I wash it out with anything? Run it under hot/cold water? Keep it covered and don't touch it? I know... I should go in. But, if I don't... what would you recommend my doing?

You're killing me. (And, scaring me... infection of the bone?!)

*sigh* I'm probably going to be scared into going to the doctor now. Do I have to go tonight or ya think it can wait until morning? All offices are closed now, so I'd have to go to emergency and really don't want to pay the emergency bill.

Superglue does work for small cuts... it's actually recommended by a few nurses I work with... also try butterfly's... the small sticky strips.... they are designed for this type of thing... or come on over and I'll stitch ya up myself! wink

look, i've assisted in amputating many appendages...most of them because the bone has become infected and nothing can be done...i dont know how bad it it cause i cant see it...but if it gets infected dont say i didnt warn you hmph!

so...get your ass to a doctor

Will buy some butterfly strip things if Ardeo thinks it can wait until morning. I think I'm gonna pass on the superglue, though... that scares me. Not as much as amputation though!

You know what the glue is that they use at hospitals?

Super glue. Yeah, it's under a fancy medical name and costs a lot more, but I've compared the ingredients. Same damn thing.

thumbs up!

yes! butterfly strips! Once when I was little, my sister was chasing me around and I slipped on the carpet that was on the wooden floow and my temple smashed into a closet hinge. My mom closed it up herself with them - I have a crater-like scar but it healed up just fine!

if this thing is an inch long, and you can see bone, I don't see that butterfly strips are going to be the answer. Ardeo has it right--and go ahead to the doc rather than wait, because that mkes it more difficult and prone to infection.

(by now Azure has gone and returned edit)

I dunno, but the average person has two hands and 10 fingers. I don't see how hurting one finger would cause a huge problem..... wink

I'm not recommending this but...
Years ago at work I broke the neck of a beer bottle when opening it. It cut the middle finger of my left hand down to the bone on the inside of the middle joint. (1/2 inch flap of skin I could lift up and see the bone under.) I stuck my hand in a bucket of ice and water till the bleeding stopped, dried it off and wrapped it up nice and tight with bandage tape and carried on working.
The next morning I went to the emergency room to see about getting stitches. I was told it had been too long and stitches would do no good, and to keep it tightly wrapped and avoid bending it so it would heal. (No tetanus shot either - I told them I had one 6 months before) So for the next week or so I wrapped it every day so it was unable to bend, and it healed fine, leaving just a faint scar.
Maybe I was just lucky not to get an infection, although I do seem to heal very well from cuts/burns etc!

What some people drink on a Sat night is way more poisonous. wink

From what I understand rock climbers were one of the first to start using super glue for cuts, but only for emergency cases. If you have other options those are preferred. The fact that the active ingredients are the same, doesn't mean that what they use at the hospital is exactly the same.

It doesn't hurt, never went numb and had stopped bleeding hours prior to my posting this thread. And, like Joey said... even if it were doing all of those things, I still have nine other fingers to type with.
