Meet My Cats; DeeDee & Dexter! <----DeeDee <---- Dexter
Now these are my very strange cats indeed. I got them in winter 2001 when they were called Toto and Feline, but I quickly renamed them. They came from the pet shelter and they were really nervous, With DeeDee this was no problem; she is an attention whore. As soon as she knows you a bit she will come over. With me it is all different. She knows me very well and let's me do anything with her; pick her up, pet her, carry her around. Not so with Dexter; he is still very skittish. He's got a manual; my oh my! He dislikes sudden movement and loud noises. As soon as he gets an overload he runs and hides. When I got my new appartment I built him a hide away undernath my cupboard, complete with comfy basket where he spends loads of time. Anyways, I am only allowed to pet him since a year, and then only under special circumstances. He needs to have an escape route and strangely needs to have pressure on his spine when he lies down to be petted; he needs a little hollow, most times applied with my arm, while I gently pet him. The other moment I am allowed to pet him is in the dark, he wont run away as easily, unless I make a loud noise. Fun thing about those times he is rowdy, pushing inty my hand violently, as if he cant get enuf. Weird cat, huh? But real sweet. Well, guess what happened today! I am sitting in my comfy chair and feel a cat's tail underneath my legs, begging for attention. Thinking it's attentionwhore DeeDee, I shrug the catbody away, cuz I just gave her an inmense petting. Then I see it's Dexter! Normally, if he does sumthing like that he is gone when I move, but even while I came forward to stroke him, he got all cuddly with me! He started pushing his head into my hands and came back! This kept on for like five minutes; a record! Then it is enough, he walks away. I decide to get up to check my mail and he jumps onto the chair. There he allowed me to pet him an additional 10 minutes. I am in cat heaven! This means he is getting way more comfortable! But the funniest thing happened when he finally ran away again. I returned to my computer and he follwos me, nudging my legs with his head. He was so comfortable I decided to push the envelope; I lifted him up onto my desk and started stroking again, but he was now too skittish, as I only lifted him like 10 times in three years, most times to push him into a basket and then off to; SHOCK HORROR the vet. But he stayed put for like two whole minutes, walking to and fro on my desk, but allowing himself to be petted. As you can understand I am very happy with this development; I love my cats dearly and invested alot of time in getting them to socialise. And now it seems to pay off; from lil kitten that hid behind my radiator (had to screw it off the wall to get him out) to bold tomcat on bosses desk! I just had to share my litlle pleasures. Moderator | That's so cute!
Good for you Gooey! My Ex had a cat like that, his name was Shadow and he would hide in the bathtub all day...he'd scare the crap out of you late at night when you went to the potty to do your business ... the second he heard the flush he would bust through the shower curtain like a bat out of hell and claw at the door until you opened it. :giggle In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

That's such a nice story. Why were the cats so skittish in the first place, did they come from an abusive home?

Born in the pet shelter, they did not come into contact with humans unless to be fed or to get the kitty litterbox cleaned. They were not used to be handled or played with...
