Random Acts of Kindness

Not to be all Oprafied and everything, but what's the last kind thing you did to surprise someone or bring a smile to their face? Don't count birthday/wedding/housewarming gift giving... I'm looking for something more along the lines of, ooooh, doing something to lift ones spirits, a gift out of the blue because you were thinking of that person, standing at the door naked for your partner, sending a card/note to say hello... things of that nature.

No seriously.....I try to do something nice for people whenever I can. I do little things like.....I posted off a couple of Prince bootlegs to an orger because she didn't have see Prince in an aftershow gig that he did in her hometown. I just happened to have the cd's for that gig, so I sent it to her. She loved it. Plus other things like just helping people in general. I guess we should all do little things to make this life a better one.

And today there was a guy sitting outside a sandwhich store asking for change and while I was in getting a sandwhich I bought him one and then gave him an extra dollar on top of it.

I know a lot of people harp on the homeless people and how their own actions landed them there but can't people just have some human decency and feed someone in need regardless of whether or not it's their fault their doing bad? Not all people are at fault ya know. Bad things happen to good people. I cannot in good concience deny someone help when I know I have so much more than they do.

I was driving along yesterday evening and saw this guy who needed a ride. He was wearing a hat, sunglasses, a bra, and a jockstrap. I figured he was out sunbathing and someone stole his car, and I felt really sorry for him. I think I ended up dropping him off somewhere in Starkitty's neighborhood.

In NY we use MetroCards on the subways and buses. When they expire they expire at 3am. For example, if your MetroCard is due to expire on "Friday" it's still usable until 3am Saturday. So when I'm on way home on the days that my card is due to expire, I always seek out someone standing at the busstop, and offer the card to them.

I remember the first time I tried this. I must've come off like I was trying to sell it because no one wanted it. So now, I just say "I don't need this anymore, it's good til 3am. You can have it." People are usually pretty thankful. Saves them 2 bucks!

I felt good about something that happened today at work. A student stopped by concerned about his housing situation. He's currently in a student dorm but his fiance will be arriving soon and couples and families are not accommodated. He's on a wait list for housing. I called the housing office, but there wasn't much they could do. He's tried apartment hunting but the rents are just too high in the neighborhood.

An hour later a former student stops by. He will be leaving for Guatemala in a month and his apartment will be available. Although it's an 1 1/2 commute the rent is VERY reasonable and he lives in a residential neighborhood.

Knowing this might be a good opportunity for the student and his finance I asked the former student if it would be okay inform the student about the availability. I emailed him and he responded--in caps--that he was interested. Now, I hope he gets the apartment.

Funny, an hour or so after that, ANOTHER student stopped by with the same problem. Couldn't him, though.
