I have two papers due by midnight, and then I am FREE of classes! Until Monday, that is. I'm going camping at the beach with housemates and friends tomorrow. I plan on drinking lots!

What have you fellow orgers got in store?

Going out with some friends tonight... and working through the weekend. What time I have inbetween... preparing a cover letter for my resume and working on my portfolio. It's time to get disciplined.

They're for my film class! One is a response paper to this week's reading, and another one is my FINAL paper... I'm writing on the "star text" that's been generated around Prince (using Richard Dyer's writings as a guide, sorta). Normally, I would be excited to write about Prince and pick him apart even more, but I'm under serious pressure... so it's just not enjoyable

It's mostly just the image that has been created around the star, mostly taking into consideration the publicity that surrounds them. It includes promotional materials from their films, tabloid coverage, interviews, fan club materials, and so on and so forth.

ugh I was afraid you'd say that. I've spent the first half of the paper talking about Prince in general, so now I've got to get down to specifics. Meaning narrow it down to one tiny slice of his career that embodies everything I've said.

I'm re-reading through what's already been written, and I think my main point is that Prince has always carved out that little niche of not wanting to (and his refusal of) being categorized. In terms of race, sexual orientation, even what his music is. But at the same time, Warner Brothers - and the media - really jumped on that bandwagon, and began to market him as such. It's what I've got so far, and it's so boooooring. Nothing that hasn't been said before. Which is why I want to stay away from the symbol period - so incredibly overdone. But I guess it's my best shot, eh?

Instead of looking at his films, I'm looking at his music videos. Any ideas?

You could link the name change (which wasn't legal, right? but which had an aura of legality about it) to the legal act of copyrighting his works. So a connection between identity and commodification, a circumvention of copyright law by natural law or something like that.
