Oscar-Winning Composer Jerry Goldsmith Dies in L.A.

By Arthur Spiegelman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Composer Jerry Goldsmith, who won an Oscar for the music to the 1976 Satanic thriller "The Omen" and also composed the scores for "Alien," "Rambo," "Chinatown," and "Patton," has died at age 75, his family said on Thursday.

Goldsmith was also known for his music for some of television's classic shows including "The Waltons," "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "The Twilight Zone," "Dr. Kildare" and the annual Academy Awards, for which he composed a still used fanfare.

He died on Wednesday night at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with cancer.

A five-time Emmy Award winner, Goldsmith also received 17 Academy Award nominations over a career spanning nearly a half century. He won his only Oscar for the chilling film "The Omen," in which Gregory Peck leads a doomed effort to stop the son of Satan from growing up and taking over the world.

Goldsmith's widow, Carol, told Reuters, "He was proud that for that film he reversed 'Ave Maria' and made it into an 'Ave Satani."'

Mrs Goldsmith said her husband always refused to choose a favorite among his works saying, "My favorite score is the one I haven't written yet."

She added, "He also used to lecture his film school students that if they were scoring a scene for a man on a horse galloping away, you don't score the gallop but you score the fear of the rider."

Among Goldsmith's film scores were the music for the "Star Trek" film series, "Chinatown," "Patton," "Basic Instinct," "L.A. Confidential," "The Blue Max," "Poltergeist," "Rambo," "The Mummy," "Lonely Are the Brave," "Total Recall," "Mulan," "Hoosiers" and "Planet of the Apes."

He won fame in the industry for the speed with which he wrote and recorded the score for "Chinatown," a feat Mrs Goldsmith said was accomplished in nine or 10 days and which involved a full orchestra with four grand pianos.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five children, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

This is very sad. He was a wonderful talent. Just the other
day I was humming the Gremlins theme smile

His music will live forever in the movies anyway
