Honor your family veterans at the National WWII Memorial!

Byron's wonderful thread about his father inspired me to post this. Many of our relatives are or were WWII Veterans. For so long their contributions to the freedom of the world was overlooked, but this year a memorial in Washington D.C. was finally opened in their honor.
What you may not know is that it's free to register your veteran with the memorial to be honored. It only takes a few minutes and it's a wonderful gift/tribute to your loved ones who sacrificed themselves.

My dad and two uncles have been honored here...unfortunately, my dad passed away before the memorial was conceptualized, but my uncles are still kickin' and when I told them I wanted to honor them...they said they weren't "heroes" and didn't deserve it. But, all of those men and women were heroes and deserve to be recognized. smile

wink --- totally agree with that last statement ....

was curious ... how does it work ... as far as your father ... who died before the memorial was complete ... do you just "submit" his name .. and then what ... sorry alittle clueless here ....

its a great idea ...

my grandfather was in WW1 in the army ... a couple of months before WW2 he told my grandmother "there is gonna be a war" --- and he signed up ! but because he was practicing medicine and alittle older ... the Army would not take him ... so he was "put" into the Navy .... and served in some of the "hellish " areas of the Pacific (okinawa to be specific) ... he lived a long life .... but in alot of ways ... he is my hero ... and it sounds like a nice "tribute" ...

I went to this memorial's dedication with my 81 year old father (and WWII vet) over Memorial Day. I will never, ever forget it! Strangers came up to my dad and thanked him for fighting for our country. It opened my eyes to things I had taken for granted for years. Good thread.

biggrin That's wonderful that you want to honor him!

Well, you can click on the link above and then click "register an honoree" (at the top of the page.) Once you create an account for yourself (you need to do this to submit an honoree.)

It will ask for the following information about your honoree:

Name
Branch of Service
Rank
Hometown
What activities the person was involved in during the war.

Then...a few weeks later you will get a confirmation via email that the person's information has been added to the registery.
