Superman Movie News!!!

Bryan Singer Confirmed for Superman! Source: Variety Monday, July 19, 2004

Both good news and bad news. Variety has just confirmed that "X-Men" series director Bryan Singer signed a deal Friday to develop and direct Warner Bros.' Superman. The bad? He will not be doing X-Men 3. Here are highlights from the article, we'll link to the full article if/when it becomes available...

-Singer, who helmed "The X-Men" comicbook adaptations for Fox, is expected to work with "X-2" scribes Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris to draft a tentpole that starts production late this year in Australia.

-A tug-of-war over Singer's next project had been going on for weeks, with Fox's third "X-Men" installment competing with Warner's remake of "Logan's Run" to land the helmer. It now looks likely that Singer will not do the third "X-Men," even though he has an overall deal with Fox.

-Besides the recent exit of helmer McG from the "Superman" project, producers Neal Moritz and Gilbert Adler have apparently disappeared from the scene as well. The fate of Jon Peters also is up in the air.

-The studio apparently scrapped a J.J. Abrams script that WB once was high on.

-The studio tapped Australia as a reasonably priced shooting location, with a budget said to be around $200 million, and wanted to put the franchise in the hands of Adler and Moritz. But Moritz's deal was never made and it's uncertain whether Adler, who did have a deal, will remain involved.

-The WMA-repped Singer also is said to have a new take on the pic. Before his involvement, it was to revolve around Superman's battle with Lex Luthor and a mysterious figure from Krypton who has come to hunt down the Man of Steel.

-"My interest in Superman dates back many, many years," Singer said. "In fact, it was the Richard Donner classic film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the X-Men universe for the screen. I feel that Superman has been late in his return and it is time for him to fly again."

Okay, my two cents: While I'm VERY dissapointed that Singer won't be helming X3, I'm breathing a sigh of relief that the WB suits have got a good director for this project, and that they are scrapping that gawd-awful JJ Abrams script (which was, in my opinion, one of the WORST things I've ever read. Made Batman & Robin look like Citizen Kane). Supes is an icon, and deserves to be done right.

Now, WB seems to have the DC Big Three in capable hands (Singer on Supes, Nolan on Bats, Kalodegris on Wonder Woman), so why can't they get their second string characters right? Catwoman promises to suck shite, and the news that Green Lantern would be made into a "zany comedy starring Jack Black" has me wretching. C'mon WB, don't do this to the fans. Give GL and your other great characters the same repect you are finally giving to your three flagship heroes.

My 10 cents:

Firstly,I don't think another superman movie should be made. The first one is PERFECT,and no matter how you slice it,there's no way anything is going to come close. In that respect,I think singer is making a good call in not doing an origin story.

If it has to be done though, the only way I could see it working is if Donner came back --just have him pick up where he left off.Casing wise--that's too tough.Chris Reeve IS Superman.Period.The only person that I can think that could come close to pulling this off would be Jim Caveizel.

On another note, apparantly the Superman II:Donner Cut might be happening.Warnes is negotiating.Part of the reason for this is marlon's passing on.It's a shame that it takes that for us to finally be able to see it,but it would make a great tribute.

Well, I agree that the original Superman is fantastic, but that doesn't prevent me from wanting to see more adventures on the big screen (plus, I really don't want the last time that The Man Of Steel graces the big screen to be Superman IV: The Quest For Peace barf )! I love that Singer sites Donner's film as an inspiration. That certainly bodes well. Now, its gonna be a bitch to replace Christopher Reeve, since he was the best piece of casting Hollywood has EVER done. I don't envy whoever gets chosen to fill those tights. Singer did right by the X-Men, so I gotta believe that he can pull it off. (and really, almost anyone is better than McG)

As for the Donner cut of Superman II, all I can say is... ITS ABOUT DAMNED TIME!!!! Everytime I watch that flick I always feel like something is missing. Its so close to being great, but just barely misses the mark and turns out merely good.

Ummm, no. These are my words. Feel free to post up a link if you feel I've plagarised it. I know that Harry and Moriarty both ranted along these lines, and may have said similar things, but this text wasn't from that site. The news item from Variety is copied, but I gave them credit.

I've never had any trouble articulating. I feel no need to use someone else's words to get my point across. I don't care for your accusation.

Here are the aintitcool news stories relating to Superman, Green Lantern and Batman. To be fair, some similar comments to mine are in there, but you can decide for yourself if they constitute an EXACT text:

Strange... as of this morning, it looks like the big three DC characters are all being treated right. Superman with Bryan Singer and Daughterty/Harris, Batman with Nolan and Goyer, and Wonder Woman in the capable hands of Laeta Kalogridis. So why can't they get any of their second string characters right? Time will tell...

thats what caught my attention...come on, no harm was intended...i seriously thought you had forgot to quote the source or something...the sentence was so familiar it registered that i had read it somewhere..

no big deal.... wink
