It looks stupid. They fucked it up just to jump on the current superhero bandwagon. I'm refusin to see this one based on principle. I really hope it does shitty at the box office.

Maybe then execs will get the message that they'll only make serious money off something that stays true to, if not the exact storyline, the spirit of the original story.

It really worries me that since comic book inspired movies are in vogue right noe that everyone will do them. Next thing you know We'll end up with something like Shaq starring as Captain America ( A Super Soldier created for the first Gulf War).....

I'm not a total comic fan-boy. I understand that a good percentage of the movie going public has never picked up a comic book in their life, but studios must realize that the origins were, in most cases, written almost 40 years ago. They've stood the test of time. Sure, they've been modified over the years, Batman: Year One, Simonson's retelling of Superman's oriogin (mid 80's)... but the character & their personality/flaws remained the same.

I hate when studio heads get a story & say Fantastic Four, great concept; but let's make 1 guy Chinese, Sue should be a lesbian and Ben should be African American that way we get a good demographic representation of society.....

Sorry for ranting smilebatmansuperman

I would rather watch a film about cats & hairballs than I would watch this bastardization of the Catwoman mythos. Just like if it doesn't happen in NYC, it's not the Punisher; if it isn't Selina Kyle, it ain't Catwoman!!!!

Right on! thumbs up!

me thinks there have been numerous Catwoman's through the batman years.....not just selina kyle.

DI NOVI: Well, you know, we had a real challenge with Catwoman because as you know fans of these comics are very into being true to the comics. The challenge that we had with Catwoman is there are 12 versions of Catwoman. She was a prostitute, she was a jewel thief, she was an orphan, runaway street girl, there were a lot of versions of her. So, unlike Spider-Man or Batman where there's a pretty clear origin story and pretty clear rules to follow, there are many versions of Catwoman. I mean, her costume ranged from a dress with a cape to a garter belt. She's just all over the map. So, what we tried to do was sort of look at all these things and stay true to the essence of the character that was consistent throughout all these versions. Batman Returns is one version, and it's the only movie version, so the nod that we gave to that version was the cats breathing life into her. It's not really re-treading ground, because we've developed a whole rationale and back story and origin story of why the cats do this, going back to true, actual historical myths of cats, going back to Ancient Egypt. We actually have the real cat … that was a temple cat, going back to Ancient Egypt in the Temple of Bast, which is the cat goddess, the protector of women. So we have brought in all this kind of true back story, that really goes so much deeper and wider than anything you saw in Batman Returns, but there is a slight nod to that history. Then, in terms of her being the meek and mild abused by a male boss, that's pretty consistent in all the comics, that she was somebody that was downtrodden in whatever version you're in, discovers her inner power as Catwoman, and then fought for the underdog on both sides of the law.

IGNFF: You did touch on some of the fan reaction to the project – did you find any of the criticisms that have been voiced online helpful or informative, or is this just another unwarranted headache or intrusion that a producer has to contend with?

DI NOVI: You know, listen, I make my movies for the audience, not for myself, so I always listen to what fans say, whether they're online or at screenings or whatever. I always care. The thing that I found confusing – there were two things that I found confusing, by some of the online reaction, was when we got criticism for the costume being too sexy, which I find completely mystifying, because Catwoman is about being sexy, and Halle Berry is extremely sexy and I'm sort of like, "Well, this is a bad thing? What's wrong with her being sexy?" The other is that we didn't stick to the – they felt that we weren't true enough to the comic. But, in response to that I would like to say, "Which version would you have me be true to?" I think we changed her name from Selina Kyle, but that's because part of our Catwoman mythology is that any woman could become Catwoman. Any woman out there could become a Catwoman, based on our mythology, which I think makes her a much more relatable character. We did take that dramatic license. To make her Selina Kyle would mean that we would have to do a sequel to Batman Returns, with that character, because that's where she originated.

IGNFF: Then you're also stuck with the idea of trying to cast somebody who's always going to be compared back to Michelle Pfeiffer.

DI NOVI: Exactly. Michelle Pfeiffer's performance was historic, it was brilliant. I think it should stand alone as what it was, you know? Also, I felt that we were free to create our Catwoman because obviously all the comic artists and comic creators felt free to change her back story 11 times.

IGNFF: Pitof is making his American feature film directing debut on Catwoman. What made him the best candidate for this job? Were there any difficulties with the studio over the selection of such a relatively untested filmmaker to film one of their tentpole releases?

DI NOVI: You know, believe it or not, they were as impressed with him as I was. When we saw his French film he blew everyone away including Jeff Robinov, the head of the studio. It's a really impressive film and the great thing about it is it creates a world and you know that you're in the hands of a visionary filmmaker from the first frame of his movie. That's really what I wanted for Catwoman. I didn't want it to look like just another kind of mainstream, popcorn, summer movie. I wanted it to have a beauty and a style and to sort of transcend the genre a little bit, and have it be more stylish and sophisticated than the average movie. Also, I wanted a director who took the character as seriously as I did. I think being French, he sort of had a bit of a distance from the whole – I shouldn't say distance. He had a kind of respect for American pop culture that sometimes foreigners have, to a greater degree than we have

Not unless it's some recent development. As far as I know, Tim Drake is still Robin.
