DVD Movie Rentals...

I've been on a DVD rental tear lately...it's the whole Blockbuster "rent all the movies you want for only $24.99 a month" thing, I guess... neutral

Anyhoo...in case some of you are either looking for something worthwhile to rent or something to avoid at any costs...here are my suggestions:

Capturing The Friedmans... *** 1/2 (out of 4)
Great documentary...very well done.

Touching The Void... ***
Another very good documentary...extraordinary what these two mountain climbers went thru. nod

Gangs Of New York... **
Found myself a bit too bored too often...Daniel Day-Lewis almost made it worthwhile...almost.

Winged Migration... *** 1/2
There are some simply stunning scenes and visuals in this documentary...just amazing.

City Of God... ****
Great, great movie...ridiculously watchable.

Monster... ***
Ms. Theron did a superb job...

Mona Lisa Smile... ** 1/2
Eh...decent enough, though predictable enough as well. The ending was a bit too hokey, tho...

Miracle... ***
I'm not a sports nut by any stretch, and I can't stand hockey..lol...but this was a good watch (and Kurt Russell was great!)

Mystic River... ***
Should have been devastating, instead of merely very good...and Sean Penn deserved that Oscar.

House Of Sand And Fog... ***1/2
Great acting, still riviting even though I'd read the book.

Shattered Glass... ****
Amazing, amazing movie...and based on a true story.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre... * 1/2
Ok, so I was bored senseless...sue me.

Anyone wanna add some choices of their own??...

.

LOTR Trilogy - 5/5
Easily some of the best films ever made and definately worthwhile for Tolkien fans and non-fans alike - there's something for everyone

The Last Samurai - 5/5 also
One of the best films I've ever seen and some of the best acting I've seen from Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe, also...an AWESOME film

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) ***
People fall in love quickly and easily in Disney movies. Often all it takes is to see somebody of the opposite sex singing a song, and true, eternal love is the immediate result. That trend begins in Snow White, as she sings a song with a handsome goofball near a well, and she's head over heels. This prince of hers apparently does nothing but roam through the forest singing love songs. Ah, well. We're told that they live happily ever after. Snow White is actually a bit of a drip herself, so perhaps they were made for each other.

Disney's first movie is among my favorites. I seems to particularly enjoy evil characters, and Snow White offers the "wicked queen" and the "scary witch." The film's climax effectively manipulates my emotions. After Snow White has bitten the poisoned apple, the dwarfs, thinking she is dead, weep in sorrow. I, of course, know the names of all seven dwarfs and narrate as the movie goes: "Happy is sad. Grumpy is sad. Dopey is sad. The animals are sad. They're sad outside." Then, once the "handsome prince" comes, and, "kisses on" Snow White. I'm every bit as joyful as the dwarfs are. biggrin
Love it or shove it!

Cinderella (1950) ***
Cinderella was one of my later discoveries. I seems to like the funny little mice (though their squeaky voices grate on my nerves) and the nasty cat, Lucifer. It's a far better movie than Bambi, but that's not saying much at all.
Love it or shove it!

The Lion King (1994) *
I'm fairly indifferent to Disney's biggest hit ever. I've attempted to watch it only a couple of times, and never made it through a complete viewing. My best friend Marge doesn't like The Lion King very much either. She says that Simba is "a little brat."

You're making the right choice. According to the back of the box, it's "karate kicking, kung-fu gripping, jujitsu flipping fun to the power of 3!"

Me too! I'm doing the $24.99 thingy too!

Mystic River starstarstarstar Sean Penn was incredible!

House of Sand and Fog starstarstarstar The whole cast was perfect... Sir Ben Kingsley was awesome!

Butterfly Effect starstarstar Ashton Kutcher made a good movie!

Eurotrip star1/2 There were some funny moments.

Starship Troopers 2 star Eh... it was okay.

Whalerider starstar In my opinion, it didn't live up to the hype... confused

Monster starstarstarstar AWESOME! Charlize.... my goodness. touched

Somethings Gotta Give starstarstar Jack was Jack... Diane was Diane... and that's just great!

Stuck On You starstar 1/2 Overall funny.

My Life As a House starstarstar Anakin Skywalker proves he can act! Kevin Kline was good too.

I like this new Blockbuster set up, cuz I've been watching more movies for a set price. I've seen movies that I'd normally skip over, simply due to cost... so it's pretty cool!

mr.green
