I don't use blasphemous words, but I don't have a problem with other people using them.
I am an athiest and as such I think it's would be disingenuous of me to use expressions relating to deities I don't believe in. I have actually had to train myself out of using certain expressions, which I used simply because they are part of regular vocabulary of the society I live in. The usual exclamations like "Oh for God's sake", "Oh Lord", variations on the "Jesus" theme (or "Jaysus" - the Dublin version) are the ones I'm talking about. When you're brought up hearing these expressions all around you, you don't even consider the meaning of them, they just become part of your vocabulary. So now, every time I would previously have used a blashphemous expression, I say "Oh for fucks sake" (or smilar) instead. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I think it's disrespectful, whatever the god, whatever the religion, to blaspheme. Here the predominant religion is Buddhism, although Christianity is more prevalent than you might imagine. While Thai Buddhists are, I think it's fair to say, very, very superstitious people, it makes no sense to make fun of this or any other seemingly odd (to some Westerners) practice. Same with taking the Christian god's name in vain. Just sounds a little crude too, whatever the religious importance. I simply don't like people talking crudely anytime (except in certain comic circumstances where it's necessary i.e. for one of my threads). Me, I'm dead articulate, and I'm politeness & respectfulness personified.

Or, For Allahs sake...? Just isnt right Nothing wrong in it, apart from using the F-word in the same sentence! You see, it's more of a 'western culture' thing. Many peeps use the above (clean) expressions in other cultures quite often without it being blaspheming.

I think it definitely wrong in that you're using the name of God, Allah, Buddha etc. in a jocular or aggressive way that is entirely disrespectful. They are not words, entities, to be joked about or used alongside profanity in such crude-sounding, slack-jawed exclamations.
Just like your mother. U wouldn't include her in such a phrase. Some things deserve respect. ... [This message was edited Thu Jul 15 3:25:17 2004 by fauxnewbie]

But why say it, what does it actually mean, and why refer to Allah when expressing something bad, shocking, good etc? I was refering to your earlier post when you said "....or, For Allah's sake...." There is a distinct difference between bad, shocking, good, etc., all depending on context. Just coz it may seem blasphemous in one culture, you can't say it's universally wrong everywhere. For example, if someone has done something shocking, the pharse "For Allah's sake, stop! (or don't do it again!) refers to the "wrong doer" to stop in his name if not for any other.

Then I guess you'll be staying away from the P&R forum.
