Dignity and Class

is there a difference?

can you be dignified without having class? classy without being dignified?

does it matter how you portrait yourself to others?

just wondering what everybody's thoughts might be...

this wasn't aimed at anybody in particular - more of a general thought. i work with a lot of folks who outwardly don't appear to be classy in the traditional sense, but have lots of dignity.

i'm not sure how that translates to online interactions, though. just thought it was interesting to think about and get other people's input on.

And to answer your question...lol...I always felt as if class referred to how someone carries themselves...and dignity referred to how one treated others. Kinda. Sorta. confused

You can have dignaty with out class. I too work with a wide variety of people and i find that the people "with out so called class" are often more dignified and have more self respect than other people who have a better outward appearance

class i think is more of a first opinion u have of some1 the first times u meet them, there language and body language which can all be attained by education

dignaty is entirly different and has more to do in how and where the person see's them selves within society

I agree with you lollypOp in the sense that as far as class is concerned it all depends on how one defines what is classy to them. Dignity is bearing characteristics which command respect and therefore this does not necessarily have to be achieved by class. I really do care how I come across to others and therefore I would prefer to come across as dignified rather than outwardly classy.

I know what u mean i don't i ever come a think i come across as classy but in my reaction to others and the way i behave i think i am very dignified. I don't particulary care what others think though.....

i just treat others how i would want to be treated, if they have a problem with me i don't give a damn!

One thing is for sure... They are both nouns.

I always viewed dignity as more of an esteem thing, and class as elegance.

I think you can be both and at the same time appear that you are neither. Judge not a book by it's cover.

This just reminds me of a Jerry Springer episode I saw once. You know when at the end they take questions from the audience, well this one person in the crowd directed a comment toward one of the women on the show. Something about how she had no class or something like that. Anyway, the woman (who was the epitome of a Jerry Springer guest) stands up and screams back, " I GOT CLASS! I got PLENTY of class! I got 4 fuckin' kids! I take CARE of my kids!..... " etc.

lol

Now THAT's a classy person, IMO.

So anyway, that's always what I think of when I hear that word from now on.

fair enough. beyond projecting an image toward others, how about showing dignity to oneself?

I agree they are both about respect...respect for yourself (dignity) and respect for others (class) they go hand in hand nod

reminds me of the irony in the song "Class" in Chicago...

MATRON(Spoken)
The whole world's gone low-brow. Thing's ain't what
they used to be.

VELMA(Spoken)
They sure ain't, Mama. They sure ain't it's all gone.

(Singing)
Whatever happened to fair dealing?
And pure ethics
And nice manners?
Why is it everyone now os a pain in the ass?
Whatever happened to class?

MATRON
Class.
Whatever happened to, "Please, may I?"
And, "Yes, thank you?"
And, "How charming?"
Now, every son of a bitch is a snake in the grass
Whatever happened to class?

VELMA AND MATRON
Class!
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
To open up the doors
There ain't no ladies now,
There's only pigs and whores
And even kids'll knock ya down
So's they can pass
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
Whatever happened to old values?

MATRON
And fine morals?

VELMA
And good breeding?

MATRON
Now, no one even says "oops" when they're
Passing their gas
Whatevcer happened to class?

VELMA
Class

VELMA AND MATRON
Ah, there ain't no gentlemen
That's fit for any use
And any girl'd touch your privates
For a deuce

MATRON
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA
And even kids'll kick your shins and give you sass

VELMA AND MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

VELMA
All you read about today is rape and theft

MATRON
Jesus Christ, ain't there no decency left?

VELMA AND MATRON
Nobody's got no class!

MATRON
Every guy is a snot!

VELMA
Every girl is a twat!

MATRON
Holy shit

VELMA
Holy shit

MATRON
What a shame

VELMA
What a shame

VELMA AND MATRON
What became of class?
