Back to topic. Is it me or is Alex Ross highly overrated?I appreciate the "realism " aspect, but his models all look like 50's john wayne type meatheads and there's just no "soul" to the work. "Pam...that's just stupid." | |

I don't think he's overrated at all. He's the comic industry's most sought after painter, and cover artist. And he deserves to be. His artwork is very confident, and alwyas see, to be superior in preperation to other artists...espescially of the mid 90's. I love his style....it show great attention to detail, without being really top heavy on technique ( i.e. Boris Vallejo ). His use of contrast, light, and ability to render subjects in a realistic manner, without having a paper-thin barrier between fantasy and reality make him on of my fav's for sure! "Look guys! I do not work my ass off 20 hours a week to just throw my hard earned money away! These dollar bills are for me to kiss....and put in some strippers underwear!"

I agree with most of these, except I LOVE Bagley's Spider-Man, and I absolutely DETEST Erik Larsen and Romita JR. All of Larsen's stuff looks like it was drawn by a five year old, and he is an AWFUL writer as well. As for Romita JR, I really think he rides on his dad's name. NEAL ADAMS--If I had to choose just one, it'd be Neal.IHis heroes looked like the Gods they were meant to represent. STEVE DITKO---here's a cat who applied Aristotle's principals to his craft.'nuff said. BERNI WRIGHTSON--his early stuff fromthe 70's holds an emotional resonance that just stays with you. FRANK MILLER--early stuff up to DKR.Sin City stuff too.But he lost it with 300 and DKSA MARSHALL ROGERS--draws the definitive Batman MIKE ZECK--there's almost a Zen simplicity to his work--very few lines but such range of emotion--- the dude is highly underrated DAVE GIBBONS--his work on Watchmen is undisputed. PAUL GULACY--used Bruce Lee pics for reference and made it work. GIL KANE---every bit as innovative as Kirby and Adams---and was responsible for a major new direction and how the artform was looked upon.Gorgeous, breathtaking stuff. DAVID MAZZUCHELLI--his work is so cinematic ,that u actually come out feeling you've been watching a movie.Outstanding. Who are your favs? Agree with all of these, except I would add John Romita SR and George Perez. I also really love David Mack and Alex Ross (I know you don't care for him, but I really enjoy his stuff). Hated Mcfarlane and Rob Liefield.I do like some of Jim Lee's stuff though. Also Tim Sale--loved SPIDER-MAN :BLUE. Absolutely LOATHE Mcfarlane. He's a complete asshat. Liefeld is the single biggest hack in comics. He has no sense of perspective, all his characters look the same, and he rips off everyone he possibly can. My least favorite artist in comics (yes, I even hate him more than Larsen, and that's saying something, since I think Larsen sucks dead pig cock) Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. I may have to get the trades. As for Miller, I used to love his stuff. DKSA proved to me that he has lost the edge he once had. The art was terrible (not to mention that the story sucked too! The characterization of Dick Grayson was SO wrong, and he ripped that idea off from Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker anyway) Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. I always hear that people like JRJ's "simple" look for Spidey, and I guess I can understand the appeal. I do like his layouts, I'll give him that. I just think that Bagley does a wonderful job at conveying the physicality of Spidey. The movement and flow is almost film like. He also does an incedible job with conveying emotion through facial expression and body language. There are so many panels of Ultimate Spider-Man that don't even need the word balloons, its all there in the character's faces. As for Larsen, I just don't see the appeal. I've had friends try to convert me, and I've given it several chances. I just think his art is absolute crap. It doesn't come across as cartoonish (which is what I think he's going for) and it doesn't come across as realistic. I really have the feeling that he just farms out his work to some neighbor kid, and pays him with candy bars or something. Only Liefield can draw crappier art, and he's really not that far behind Eric.
