I just saw Spiderman 2.....

And Im not going to give away any plot points or maybe a little...so if you haven't seen it and don't want to know what happens please read on and be dissapointed... Just kidding... I went into this movie hearing how good it was and I grew to accept the first one....not like but accept...I watched this today (big comic fan I am) and I must say I have never....ever....ever ever ever seen a comic hero with a secret identity take off his freaking mask more than Spiderman did!

I mean were the directors afraid that we would forget Toby Maguire was in the movie? He took it off in front of people, villians. friends, shit what the hell is the point of having a mask....Im not one of those people who look for every detail to be correct in a movie based on a book or comic but good lawd! The whole damn point of a secret identity is I dunno to remain SECRET shhh

You can see in all the trailers many of (if not all) the times he's without the mask.

Yeah, the "taking his mask off all the time" was a bit of a surprise, but other than that I loved it.

Exactly! Why can't they go by the damn comic for once? Why can't the city be dark like its supposed too?....the characters scary and dangerous like they are supposed to?...what is so freaking hard about it? It's not like they have to come up with anything....The stories are already there, characters, powers just make the fucking movie quit changing stuff.... If the mask stays on leave it on...simple. It may seem like Im nitpicking but in Spiderman his mask and secret identity are very important to the character...The reason the Green Goblin both of them are his worst foes is cause they know him and he knows them....If everyone knows him then WTF is the point of wearing a costume?

Yeah, there was a lot of bullshit in that flick, but overall it was pretty good. It was just hard to watch scenes where the brave New Yorkers stand in front of freak like Doc Oc to protect Spiderman. In real life, the people in that train would have parted like the Red Sea and let Spiderman handle his own shit. Hey Sam Raimi, you know I love ya. But next time, hold the cheese. cheese

Not to nitpick, but that was from a panel in the comic...not the cover.

Why can't the city be dark?? Its Spider-man, not Batman.

As for following the comic, this movie did that better than ANY other film ever made. The entire film was taken from various comic stories from the 60s and 70s (down to certain bits of dialouge). The "Spider-Man no more" bit? Taken from a comic story. His problems with Mary Jane? Ditto. Harry's blaming Spider-Man for his father's death? Once again, out of the comic. Aunt May losing her house? Comic. Harry finding his father's lair? Comic. Doc Oc being a brilliant scientist? Comic. Peter having trouble keeping a job? Comic.

Oh, and if you watch the film, every time Peter takes off the mask is explained. Spider-Man has always been somewhat more realistic to me that many heroes, because his costume and mask get ripped to shreds frequently. This film did a great job of showing this. If this is what ruined the movie for you, then you had ridiculous expectations

I suppose that I should add the disclaimer that I have as yet to see the movie...
I can only hope that the explanations for his mask constantly being removed are valid...
however...as it stands...just from seeing what I saw in the trailers, I'm reliving Batman all over again...

Again, the Batman films did this with no precendent. Spider-Man does, as it happened in the comic several times. Currently, in modern continuity, dozens of people (including a few villians), know his secret identity. Peter Parker is a much more three dimensional character than most, and in real life a secret identity would be a bitch to hide. NO ONE in the film that found out his identity was not someone who discovered it in the comic.

As for Batman, it makes absolutely NO sense for him to have his indentity revealed over and over, since he is WAY too meticulous. Batman trained his whole life to be the crime fighter that he is, whereas Spider-Man had the whole situation thrust upon him. The Batman films ignored this aspect of the character, having him telling every woman he dates, or just screwing up and letting slip (and don't even get me started on the BS of Alfred letting Vicki Vale into the Batcave. He would NEVER do that). The Batman movies are much less faithful to the source material. It appears this will finally be rectified with Christopher Nolan's film next year.

In current comic continuity, over a dozen people know Batman's secret identity now...the entire Batman "family" (now including Catwoman), the JLA, Ra's Al Ghul and Talia, and possibly (most likely) James Gordon and The Joker. I find this ridiculous, considering that Bats is so protective about his alter ego...apparently that's just not such a high priority anymore.
Anyway...
I must say that I am looking forward to Batman Begins...well...with the exception of this Batmobile they're showing off...it looks like shit (in my opinion)...a vehicle like that belongs in a Mad Max movie...not Batman...lol
As to an earlier comment made about Spider-Man being dark...I don't agree with that...
Batman is dark and dark is Batman...that isn't Spider-Man...

Spider-Man is NOT a dark character. Peter has problems in his personal life, but he doesn't dwell in darkness like Bats. All that "dark" shit with Spidey didn't start until Todd "I suck shit through a straw" MacFarlane got his own title in the 90s. Spidey should be making quips and jumping from building to building. If you read anything done by Lee/Ditko or Lee/Romita, you see him in daylight as much as you do at night, and he was always the type to laugh in the face of danger (even if he was, internally, freaking out). He isn't a morose, gothic character like Batman at all.

As for Batman, I don't completely disagree with your point about his identity, but all that is fairly recent. At the time of the film, this wasn't the case. The only love interest, to date, that he has revealed his identity to is Catwoman (Talia knew from her father, and Wonder Woman found out when the rest of the JLA did).

On the whole Batman Begins thing, I understand how you feel about the Batmobile, but I also understand what he is trying to do with it. First off, it looks very similar to the Batmobile in The Dark Knight Returns, and second, I think the concept is that this is the first one he makes, based on a discarded Waynetech military prototype. The vehicle is a practicle tool, that will later become more streamlined.

okay...
I went and saw Spider-Man 2 last night...
I should've known by the fact that Roger Ebert drooled over it that it wouldn't be good...
The movie was basically crap...not Hulk movie crap...but crap nevertheless...
It was okay...but...my fear of them turning Spider-Man into Batman came to pass.
It was completely unnecessary to keep removing his mask as many times as he did...especially on the train sequence. I mean, really...did he have to remove his mask everytime he lost his powers (which counts for 2 times)?
There was also WAY too much cheeziness too...the dragging of the "emotional", gushy scenes just annoyed the piss out of me.
The special effects were okay...but, other than that, there's not a lot that I can say about this movie that would make me recommend it to someone else.
The first movie was much better, I think.
As much as Raimi may love Spidey, I think it's time he got off the boat.

The mask thing....exactly what im saying It's utterly unnecessary to the story to have it removed so much especially the train....Battle damage yes understandable but the movie is like "oh we better have him take off the mask a lot or we can't see Tobey" And as for Spiderman not being dark as was quoted in the above posts.....I wasnt refering to his character but the city....the city is waaaay to bright and friendly looking.....where is the grit this is New York not Metropolis from Superman movies.....I thought the same thing in the first Spidey it doesnt have to be Daredevil dark but it shouldnt look like Disneyland either....

Wait, lemme get JediMaster's quote, because I just think it needs to be said again.
Why can't the city be dark?? Its Spider-man, not Batman.

If this is what ruined the movie for you, then you had ridiculous expectations.

It seems to me like you went to see this movie wanting to hate it and thus found your own reasons to support your hate. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't. Long ago I went to see this new movie called Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and fully expected it to be one of the dumbest movies I'd ever seen. In retrospect, yeah it was pretty bad, but after seeing it for the first time I thought the movie was pretty damn funny for having such low expectations.

This all kinda reminds me of the screening of Star Wars Episode II those people in the Detroit Free Press had where they were to specifically look for racial stereotypes and thus found all these stereotypes only because they were looking for such things which all were baseless accusations that shouldn't even have been printed by any respected newspaper. If I would have had a subscription to that paper, I would have cancelled immediately because they had resorted to the lowest forms of journalism. It still pisses me off to this day. Jango Fett a hispanic? He's a New Zealander! Sheesh! mad

Nope...
I was expecting it to live up to the hype that it has been given...as well as my own...
With the exception of Hulk and the upcoming Ghost Rider (with Nicolas Cage...*ick*), Marvel has been making some damn good movies as of late.
I was looking forward to seeing a good movie...nay...a spectacular (no pun intended) movie...and that was not what I got.
Please don't assume that I was thinking one thing or another. Every movie I see, I treat equally...I give it as fair a shake as it deserves...
Also...you're not reading everything I'm saying...the mask b/s wasn't my only gripe...the whole movie is my gripe...it was terrible...the only thing that saved it was Alfred Molina's acting.
...and...that's all I have to say about that...

Gotta disagree. It was very true to the comic, through and through (even moreso than the first film). You say you "gave it a fair shake", yet you also say you were "expecting it to live up to the hype it had been given". Well, I see this as a total contradiction. Likewise, your previous posts pretty much show that you went in expecting to hate it. Sorry, Im not attacking you here, I just don't see that you went in with any semblance of an open mind.

I have a quick question here, I have seen this movie a ton of times allready ( I work at a Drive in on the weekends)in the comic books who is it that set up the lair where Harry finds his fathers "costume"? I thought spidey detroyed it? I am not a avid comic book reader so I am not sure can someone help me out?
