Mounting Frog Skeleton

Materials :
1. 0.3% sodium carbonate
2. TheFrog
3. Dissecting kits
4. Beaker
5. Tooth brush
6. 20% hydrogen peroxide solution

Procedure :
1. The skin and viscerate of the frog are removed.
2. With a scalpel or a pair of scissors, remove, as much as possible, the flesh from the frog. Take care of not damaging the bones.
3. Put the animal in a warm 0.3% sodium carbonate solution. No boiling is required. Just allow the solution to simmer.
4. Take out the specimen and remove as much flesh as possible from the frog.
5. Return the clear bones to the solution for a few minutes and the brush away any remaining flesh with a tooth brush.
6. Rinse the bones in running water thoroughly.
7. Bleach the bone in 20% hydrogen peroxide solution until the bones are white in looking.
8. Defat in acetone if necessary.
9. Dry the bones and articulate in order.

Comments :
1. It needs to explain to the students the aims of skeleton mounting. (for academic use)
2. Reorganize the bones is time-consuming but it seems interesting for some students and it can train the dissection skill of the students,
3. It is a cheaper way to get a large amount of skeleton models.
