The Ring - OMFG

eyepop I've just seen The Ring - OH MY GOD! eyepop

Probably the scariest film I've ever seen. I've always thought it sounded a bit naff - it was absolutely excellent.

I know most people have probably been seen it already, but if you haven't, I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I had really high hopes for this movie when it first came out and I was so diappointed, it was kinda slow, and just not really satisfying, and this is coming from a horror junkie!!!! My friends were so mad at me I dragged them all to the movies with me and they didnt like it either.

I WARNED you, but did you listen to me? Oh, no, you know, didn't you? Oh, it's just a harmless little BUNNY, isn't it?

And now the real question: which one do you prefer - the original Ringu headbang or the evil hollywood remake fishslap

I prefer the original to the remake. I don't know why but the whole "possessed videotape" bit seemed less corny to me in the Japanese version. Maybe it was because the USA remake felt the need to explain every little detail to death.

Having seen that I do now want to see Ringu to see how the original Japanese version compares.

You know what man, you should have watched the Japanesse version first!

The story's slighty different and coz of the low budget production I think it's more creepier boxed.... esp. the bit at the end!!! eek

The Hollywood version's good as well but coz you enjoyed it so much I'm gutted you didn't watch the orignal film first sad

Ringu 2 however just goes too over board coz it's alot more far fetched, but still worth a watch wink

TheFrog

i love the original, and always have.

well i say always; i mean since it was shown in the UK, of course. i don't think the remake is bad, but it doesn't display the same tension, for me.

oh, and for anyone that is thinking of buying the dvd of the original: it has the videotape recording as an extra, so you can watch it at 2am by yourself and SHIT yourself waiting for the phone to ring. cool

There was nothing very scary about the original, I think mainly because the look on the victims' faces was so laughable lol...that, plus simply going to a freeze-frame and turning into a negative image didn't exactly fill me with fear. At least in the remake, the faces become horrendously disfigured when the victims are literally "scared" to death...it makes you keep saying "What the hell made their faces turn that way??"...

it's interesting you say that, because I found one of the victim's freeze-frame screams to be one of the most unnerving parts of the film. obviously aside from the infamous crawling-out-the-television sequence. wink the first time i watched that (without having heard anything about it) i was truly shocked.

I actually LOVED the cinematography of the original (the remake was too awash in blue hues)...very effective at setting a creepy, tense atmosphere...but the "payoff" for certain build-ups of some scenes--the freeze framed faces--it just...I dunno, just left me going "Uh...ok", instead of "Whoa...what the hell??"..

I thought the girl-crawling-out-of-the-tv scene in both movies, though, was DAMN scary...and the little girl's eye from the original? Hell no... eek

Is that what Haystack has as his avatar? I haven't seen original Ringu but when I see this I am reminded of it.

Whatever (original/remake) you see first will leave the stronger impression, obviously, since it loses all impact if you know what will happen next. I saw hollywood version and couldn't sleep for 5 hours after going to bed that night, which could've been the super jumbo size frozen coke I had, or the thought that things must've been pretty bad for a mother to push her kid into a well. sad

Ringu vs The Ring? I'd go with the american version hands down. It trims out alot of the goofy stuff from the original, like the psychic visions, and the scenes where people die are more jarring. The freeze-frame negative was a complete buzz kill for me because it was so corny looking.

The American one is a bit more stylized, but I enjoyed some of that, especially the scenes with the burning tree on the hill. The horse scene on the boat was very tense as well and a nice addition.

I wouldn't say it was the scariest film i had seen, but it was pretty good.. certain parts were very suspenseful and scary...
