The Star Wars Thread Just For The Sake Of Annoying 2the9s 2the9s always hates it when we geeks start talking Star Wars (what can I say? He has really bad taste! I mean, he faithfully watches dreck like "American Idol"). Well, since I love to give him a hard time, LET'S TALK STAR WARS UNTIL HIS HEAD EXPLODES!!!!
I don't care what you wanna discuss, just as long as it involves Star Wars!!! You wanna discuss who would win in a fight between Darths Vader and Maul? Fine. You wanna discuss bizarro Freudian theories involving C-3PO? Cool! Wanna talk about how you used to masturbate for hours to a picture of Princess Leia in her slave garb? Okay by me (you perv!). Just make sure it is somehow related to George Lucas' giant cash cow from a Galaxy Far, Far Away!!!

Okay, I personally think that the Death Star Trash compactor is designed to crush wastes, and then send them through some sort of system to a furnace, where the material is reconstituted and used as fuel. A station that size would have way more waste than a Star Destoyer, so it would be extemely wasteful to dump their garbage. Also, a station that size (roughly that of the moon) would have major energy consumption issues. Recycling would be one way of recovering some of that energy. As for the beastie in the compactor, that is a creature that sometimes gets into waste systems, feeding on certain organics. (A dianoga, I believe. Someone who is even more fanatical than me will be able to confirm this). Anyhoo, the monster swims through the septic systems, until it arrives in areas like the compactor. If you recall, in that film, the monster lets go of Luke right before the compactor starts (meaning that it can detect when the compacting cycle is about to begin). It swam out through a drainage pipe that connects into the compactor. At any rate, the thing is infesting the system, and wasn't placed there by the Empire (its more like a roach or rat, in that its an unwanted pest).

2. Why do both walls of the trash compactor move towards each other, rather than employing a one-movable-wall system that would thus rely on the anchored stability, to say nothing of the strength, of the other, non-moving wall, to crush trash more effectively?
Having two moving walls applies even more pressure to the trash between them. Think of a car hitting something stationary, then think of a car hitting another car head-on. The dynamics of equal pressure on each surface area would be difficult, but I'm sure the Death Star engineers already thought about that.
3. Why does the trash compactor compact trash so slowly, and with such difficulty, once the resistance of a thin metal rod is introduced? Surely metal Death Star pieces are one of the main items of trash in need of compacting. It thus stands to reason that the trash compactor should have been better designed to handle the problem of a skinny piece of metal. (And while I hate to be the sort of person who says I told you so, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that a one-movable-wall system would have improved performance.)
He failed to see that the metal rod did nothing of the sort to slow it down and in fact bent in our heros' futile attempt to do so. Most of the other issues can be explained by JediMaster's excellent post. | |

Since they have transporter technology, they probably transform the matter into something useful for them. They don't eat or drink, so there's no organic waste. When a Borg dies, it's body disintegrates after certain cybornetic components are removed (as seen in the Next Gen episode "Q Who?"). | |
