says:

Unlike Ashley, Mary-Kate doesn't have a middle name. Ashley's middle name is Fuller(their mother's maiden name).

so what's the deal? Are their parents doing this stuff on purpose? Are they trying to make a point? Are they trying to make their kids stand out more? eek
What other celebrities don't have middle names?

Middle Names Are Too Important To Lose

During a recently cold Saturday night, I settled down in my easy chair in front of the fireplace, along with a stack of magazines and some hot cider, for a winter’s reading session. Of course, each publication had numerous stories about the new millennium and just what may happen as we make that milestone.
Which brings to my attention, if you are reading this column at this date, I assume we made it. If you are not, then I have written this bit of babbling for nothing. However, I’m going to assume we made it and continue with an observations of one article that caught my attention on that cold winter’s night.
The article was in Newsweek magazine, and it listed the things that would survive and not survive the 21st century. Things such as Oreos, whipped cream, paper chips, breakfast, Halloween, and cockroaches would be sure survivors of the next 100 years.
Items they listed as “dead meat” in the 21st century were Twinkies, lunch, toothbrushes, ovens, ashtrays, Christmas trees, phone books, neckties, wax paper, Elvis, and several other things that I may and may not agree with.
The one that I disagreed with the most was the demise of middle names. As far as I am concerned, we can say good-by to paper currency, tofu and wax paper, but doing away with middle names is a major mistake.
First of all, it will not work in the South. We pride ourselves in naming our children twice. Where would this world be without the Bobby Joes, the Billy Rays, the Robert Earls, the Peggy Sues, and the Pettus Lees. Yes. I have two names and I am very proud of both of them. I
carry the middle name of Lee, along with more than 35 percent of other southern children. However, my middle name was given to me from my aunt and not the famous southern general Robert E. Lee, but it is just as important to me as my first name.
Second, I wish to call your attention to the importance of having a middle name when it comes to the discipline of children. If there are no middle names, how will a child recognize that their parents are on the edge of committing a major discipline decision such as after the child has placed the cat in the dryer.
We all are familiar to the sound of our parents using our full name when they really wanted our attention. At that time, just using a first name will not work. It has to be the first, middle and last name spoken in a tone that could break bulletproof glass at 100 feet. When the full name is used, the child immediately knows he or she is the one in trouble and not that other Billy or Sue.
Whenever I heard my mother or father say Pettus Lee Read all in one syllable, I knew it was time to ask for the mercy of the court.
Third, we must remember that the middle name is needed so some people will have something always to hide. I agree some middle names were intended to be used only during family reunions and on passports. There are those parents who give their children a middle name just so they can fill in the blank for the birth certificate. However, the unlucky individuals who have middle names that sound like a disease, may still use the middle initial and tell their friends that they can not release their middle name to the general public due to their status in the witness protection program.
Go ahead and do away with Miss America, wristwatches and exit polls, but please leave us our middle names for the 21st century. It could be our only salvation for Y3K.

I don't have a middle name.

My parents knew the name they wished to call me, and that was that.

(It also saves on ink, keystrokes, computer memory and paper, provided you keep the name short. My history teacher eventually referred to me simply by my initial, presumably because he didn't want to waste his breath too).

I can't remember meeting anyone who didn't have a middle name. Hmm... my son has two, though.

What are middle names used for anyway? What's the reason behind them?

I knew a girl in high school who was born with no middle name. Her mother was a professor who studies African cultures, and apparently there's at least one African culture where children choose their own middle name at a certain age... maybe around 13? So her mother decided to do the same thing, and my classmate adopted a middle name that she chose herself.

My mother's name is JoAnn.....she doesn't have a middle name. A middle name really wouldn't make much sense in this case...and others similar.

I think they serve the following purposes:

1) They make it less likely that one person will be confused with another person who has the same first and last names. I know that there are other people named Matthew Conrad in the world, and it's caused problems for me on multiple occasions. For instance, one time a bank took money out of my account and gave it to another Matthew Conrad. And if you look in Martindale-Hubbell (the authoritative book of U.S. lawyers), they've the wrong biographical information under "my" listing because they've confused me with another Matthew Conrad lawyer in Indianapolis, where I used to practice.

Because of this, I'm very picky about "official" stuff having my full name, or at least my middle initial. (Still, Martindale-Hubbell has the other lawyer's middle initial under "my" listing.)

2) People who are given first names for middle names have an alternative name to go by, if they wish.

3) People who have last names for middle names (like me) can use a middle name to recognize ancestors who had different last names. My middle name is my great-grandmother's (maiden) last name. Similarly, some married women choose to take their husband's last name, but use their maiden name as their middle name. Example: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

There are some folks out there who have a middle initial, but no middle name. Example: President Harry S Truman. The "S" doesn't stand for anything.

That all makes sense. I've been confused with another Heather M. Masarik and the police actually came to arrest me when I was younger for something she had done... they never took me because they realized upon seeing me that the 16 year old they were looking at wasn't the 40-something year old they were looking for.

I've also had problems with my credit due to a few other Heather M. Mitchell's... those are VERY difficult to remedy even though you're giving them your SS#... they don't want to believe you.

Pook, I agree they use middle names for assassins, but rarely for serial killers. Do we know Jeffrey Dahmer's middle name? Ted Bundy's? Ed Guein (sp?)? No. At least I don't.
