Chicago people

I'll be relocating to Chicago from Kansas City this fall and have a few questions about apartments etc. I'm looking for something that is:

1)clean
2)safe
3)near the train/bus
4)utility inclusive
5)has laundry facilities

all for about $550-$650 in a studio or 1br.

All of the rental agencies say they cannot comment on safety due to legal reasons.

Help me, please!

i don't think you're going to find what you're looking for in that price range. i live in a safe neighborhood in a building that includes laundry room, heat and hot water, near bus/train and i am paying $835 for a one bedroom. the cheapest i saw when i moved here (last year) was 7 something for a basement apartment with no windows. there weren't any laundry rooms there either. have you been looking online? if i can think of the website we used to search the city, i'll post it. in the meantime, if there are specific areas you're concerned about just check the police logs. its public record and you can get an idea of how safe the neighborhood is that way.

thanks sassy... ive found some listings for around $600-650 for a studio... is that price range in a neighborhood such as lakeview, rogers park, buena park or edgewater considered safe and clean?

I pay around that much for my studio apartment in Lakeview. Haven't seen a roach yet. Sometimes a squirrel will wind up on my windowsill and bark at me through the screen window, but that's just cute.

I can only speak for where I've lived in my three years in Chicago, but if you set up camp in Lakeview you'll have a lot of great stuff within walking distance. Grocery stores, public transpo, wrecka stows, book stores, a 24-hour diner, a couple of arthouse cinemas within walking distance...I really find my nabe just amazingly convenient.

That said, I couldn't tell ya about what apartments have what amenities/utilities included/etc. - you're gonna have to talk to the landlords/apartment leasing weasels about that. My own little idiosynchratic piece of advice is to check the shower before you say yes to an apartment...nothing's crappier than a shower with rotten water pressure!
