IMO Alicia has real talent. She can sing, write and play and she doesn't look like a skank either. It seems as though she has her head on straight and that's partly because she knows she has real talent and doesn't have to rely on her tits and ass!

the only issue I see here is that Alicia is a trained artist.
I doubt that she'd be singing at all if it weren't for her pedigree.

Some people are natural talents (Aretha, Patti, Prince) with no initial formal musical training.
Some people have no musical inclination, but they went to arts schools and learned their craft.
I do salute her knowledge of music theory and applications, but she's not a natural. hmph!

And before you ask, yes, I am a classically trained pianist, but I was singin' and playin' in church and directin' the choir, and singin' and actin' in plays long before all of that. rolleyes

Yes, I've seen her live. Her shows are okay. Her band makes the show.
She's no Mary J. or (should I dare? *bites_knuckle*) Beyonce, even.

I'm just saying, we shouldn't "big 'er up" just yet.

i said that b/c despite the genuine and very real hate I have for Be, she does at least strive to put on a show.
I mean, if she never became a recording artist, she'd still be somewhere singin' her wittle heart out. Now if we can get her to take some music theory/application classes.... hmmm

Its not the matter of being trained or natural. Its the matter of you either got it or you don't, I'm a pianist by ear-oriented since the womb days but I learned how to read & write music when I got in high school. It doesn't hurt being trained, it helps alot

Donny was TRAINED all the way through but the brotha got it, Duke Ellington was a trained pianist, Teddy Wilson was a trained pianist, Herbie Hencock was a trained pianist and Patrice Rushen was a trained pianist but they ALL got it.

Unfortunatly 4 Alicia, she's not soulful which lead 2 the thinking that becoz she's trained which is not it. She just doesn't know how to hit people's cores/nerves simply as that, like I said some folks got it and some don't,,,she doesn't got it.

As far as other people resenting how she talks, its ALL an image nothing real about her manner of speach. People look at her act as "ghetto" all I say is get a grip, I'm ghetto to the core and I been around my people eversince the creation and we don't act like that, hell we DON'T show it to strangers, or at least we try.

And far as her music goes? Gimmiks, mix Mary J with Roberta Flack and there you got Alicia Keys. Clive found the BEST forumla to sell his shit, all I have to say is Alicia will be the one who'll get hurt by this in the long run becoz NOTHING about her music is fresh.

Norah Jones on the other hand got it good and promising nod

ok. I'll agree to that. I guess when I get ready to give kudos to a performer, it's b/c they've given me goosebumps and they make my back shiver.
Malice-cia just doesn't give me that feelin'.
I mean, when James Brown sings, "This Is A Man's World," I feel it.
But when Malice-cia takes that same track and does a few harmonious runs on it, it's just not the same.
Like I said, before, she's aiiight. neutral

I'm still up in the air about Alicia. So far the only songs of hers that have moved me have been "If I Ain't Got You" and "Diary". But I've have yet to be impressed enough to buy her albums. Her third LP might lock me if she can acquire an identity of her own.

I think you're laying on quite thick - just b/c the girl wants the world to know about whatever street edge she's supposed to have ("can't go onstage w/o my hair braided!") I've never heard her sound straight up dumb. There's a big difference between "street" & "illiterate"...

Oh yea, and she's great live nod First album sucked salty nuts but the second is cool...
