From a composition standpoint (as in overall beauty, emotion conveyed, etc.), I have a few favorites. Here's a short list. In most cases, it applies to the guitar playing throughout the song, not just the break(s) for a solo. It's just off the top of me bald, brown head:

youngca youngca, You have a knack for taking me back into the past. Mickey Baker's "How to play Hot Guitar" Books 1&2, were the 1st method books I learned chords from. There you go again. Now i've got to come up some of my favorites solos. Back down memory lane. Do you have any Johnny Smith albums? I think one of the best solos is by Steve Vai, on 'Resue me or bury me, its incredible! I'm not a big Vai fan, but have to admire his genius

Avoided this thread like the plague for days because there's just way too many great guitar solos out there. Finally I decided just to list a few that I liked because they were generally in the context of good tune and not just a platform for a solo. The Star Spangled Banner and Holdsworth...well...they're just straight up freakish. Thanks for Columboing your other thread. The Kurt Cobain line was a hoot. Likewise. Satch and Vai are definite technical monsters. The McLaughlin/Santana and Zappa were real good pulls Tribal Disorder"Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
