He's probably no virtuoso, but I have no doubt he can hold a groove and do what needs to be done.

Many of Rick's basslines have been "borrowed" by other artists. For Michael Jackson's song "Thriller",producer Quincy Jones borrowed the bassline from Rick's "Give It To Me Baby".

"I'm Rick James, Bitch!!!" giggle

Okay, now that I've got that outta my system...
I figured he's an excellent bass player judging from his work on "Mary Jane" (espcailly that pop during the chorus) and "You and I." headbang

Rick James is a very good bass player, he auditioned for Parliament Funkadelic, I don't know why he did'nt join them. Rick is also a good guitarist, there are some people who say he is'nt as good as Prince, but it is reported, that he(Rick James) actually taught Neil Young how to play guitar. Rick James also taught Teena Marie how to produce, arrange horns, & play guitar, bass, keyboards & percussion. As for which bass guitars he use, Rick uses Rickenbacher,Ibanez,Fender jazz, & Gibson, he also uses this axe bass made by a few diffrent companys( one of which that Gene Simmons from KISS has a patent on). I will be honest, I idolize Rick James & Stevie Wonder, but Prince is better than Rick on guitar, but Rick will kill Prince on bass & organ. They are about equal on drums/percussion, but Prince is better on piano than Rick, but Rick is still tight on keys as well. Rick James always said he went 2 school on Larry Graham's bass technique, & the bass style of a bad white boy name Donald(Duck)Dunn. Rick may not be THE best bass player( that honor goes to Stanley Clark,Marcus Miller,Louis Johnson,Verdine White of Earth,Wind & Fire,Victor Wooten,Mark Adams of Slave, & a few others. But Rick James can damn sho nuff play bass, his poppin technique is off the chainz!!! For that matter, Prince is'nt the best guitarist either, Stanley Jordan is & Vernon Reid, they'll kill Prince on guitar! Sorry I went on and on, but being a multi-instrumenatlist myself, I can talk good music & musician all day long
