Mariah's new movie and album

Mariah Carey ready to fight for role in movie

Reports that Mariah Carey will be playing a boxing manager in her next big-screen project, "The Sweet Science," turn out to be premature -- and wrong, according to the film's producer, Anthony Esposito.

The multiple Grammy-winning singer will instead be playing a boxer herself -- one who steps into the ring with real-life lady boxing champion Laila Ali, daughter of none other than boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

"Mariah was really keen on playing this role. At first, she was going to play the part of the boxing manager, Gloria, but she insisted on playing the boxer. She's been taking boxing lessons as part of her training," says Esposito, who is producing the film with Andrea Kreuzhage, through their Leading Pictures production company.

Esposito also produced the Mariah Carey/Mira Sorvino starrer "Wisegirls," which ended up going from Sundance Festival kudos to cable television release.

Mariah will also record a soundtrack for "The Sweet Science" romantic comedy, which will begin production in New Jersey and Canada on Nov. 10, once she finishes her current "Charmbracelet" tour.

Real estate tycoon Donald Trump has also attached himself to "The Sweet Science." Declares Esposito, "Donald is investing in the film, and he'll make a cameo as well."

And so much for the view that remarkably resilient Mariah's film career was dead on the arrival of her 2001 debut, the critically panned box-office bomb "Glitter."

It is rumored that Mariah will play a lesbian female boxer in the film
This is the same producer that produced Mariah in her star turn performances in "WISE GIRLS"

Its a shame that intresting movies like that and Wise Girls end up as independent movies while Glitter hit the main theatres.

It's just movie, I'm sure there is noactual real fighting, they just have to look like they have to fight
I thought Mariah would be too fluffy to ever play a role like "wise girls"?
Can Laila act? Michelle Rodriguez went from boxing to acting

Such a shame. Mariah has to be in the role.

I can already see the publicity:

Says Mariah, "It was really hard. I had to bulk up, and starting working out a lot more. Ali's tough though, she sure can fight, I sure have a lot of respect for her. But it was tough.

"Every morning I would work out, then we would do some shooting for the movie. Then I will work on my album, which is just jumping. As an artist, it makes me feel good that I can push myself to the next level. But, uh yeah, it was hard."

And then she'll suffer a stress overload, and we can all pity her.

I'm sorry, just that whole Glitter thing really bugged me.

They should give the part to a real actress.

Agreed. hasn't she got a career to salvage rather than wreck?

kudos to mariah for taking on a different kind of role...i hate the skank but i give her props. Obviously she's out to play an "out of the box" character that will allow her to be "accepted" into the serious acting community (like Bjork, Queen Latifah) - if she an pull a role like this off perhaps it will shed her diva-bitch-all-about herself image and maybe she will be taken seriously as an actress.

look at madonna-part of the reason why her acting gets panned and people have a hard time with it is because she is always playing a movie character that is parallel to what is going on in her own life! (body of evidence=erotica; desperately seeking susan-virgin era; next best thing=yoga instructor-madge the yoga freak, etc.)
Let the rain come down...17 days....

She's going to be like "Y'all, boxing is hard." Oh wait, that is my Britney Spears impression. Sorry.

You guys cann't say she is a bad actress
After Glitter she made an independent movie called "WISE GIRLS" (it's a mob movie along the lines of a female GOOD FELLAS)
and she was really really good, no critic gave her a bad review, They said they were all shocked how good she was
