Eddie Van Halen: dead at 65

ap_433380397742.jpg?w=600

Variety | AP | NBC LA |

Eddie Van Halen, whose innovative and explosive guitar playing kept the hard rock band that bore his family name cemented to the top of the album charts for two decades, died on Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

Van Halen’s son Wolf announced the news. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss,” Wolf Van Halen tweeted.
Born in the Netherlands and raised in Pasadena, Calif., he founded Van Halen with his older brother, drummer Alex; the siblings were joined by vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony in the first recording lineup of the group, which exploded after star-making gigs at such West Hollywood clubs as Gazzarri’s and the Starwood.

Whoa I can’t believe it. I know he was battling an alcohol problem for a long time. Man what a great loss. Him and SRV were guitar gods in the 70-80’s. I also had a crush on Bertinelli. I was hoping for a Van Halen reunion album with Roth. RIHP.

That was A Different Kind of Truth lp from 2012. Glad I got to take my son to see VH then.

Was it a good album? Hopefully some material left over for an album.

I liked it. Some of the songs were redone demos from the 70s/80s while the rest was new material. You can listen for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/w...dcGYEXnHTp

This is very sad news. What an amazing musician Eddie is. I saw VH for the first time back in 1979 and have been a big fan since. I was always in awe of how Eddie played guitar. What a huge loss for his family, friends and all his loyal fans. RIP EVH!! A virtuoso!

I saw this tour. It was great and it was worth the price of the ticket to see and hear Eddie's guitar solo that evening.

This is a rough one for me sad Eddie and Prince were my 2 all time favorite guitar players ever since I was a kid. I love Van Halen to death with Dave or sammy I am sad I’ll never get to see them live now.

No, no, no, no, just ****ing no. I'm feeling the same shock and pain I felt in 2016, with Bowie and Prince. Just some weeks ago I was blasting VH1, 1984 and 5150 in my car, and I felt the joy of being alive. I'm crying as I write this.

RIP, Thank you for the music, for the energy.

40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang.
Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin.
I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments.
I will see you in our next life my love.

Like many black people, I wasn't much of a rock fan, but I liked Van Halen, among some others, and I remember them well, andI liked them when they had David Lee Roth in the band. I always remembered Eddie, because he seemed to always have a smile on his face. He seemed like such a kind person to me, simply because of that. I just recently watched an episode of Making The Band, with Van Halen. It's sad to hear.
