He's supposedly working on an album according to this article from last year...

The Ever-Elusive D’Angelo Is Working On His Next Album

D’Angelo Photo: Mark Metcalfe/Getty Images
,

Mysterious R&B singer D’Angelo’s documentary Devil’s Pie premiered on April 27 at the Tribeca Film Festival. Per Billboard, at a Q&A, the director of the film, Carine Bijlsma, dropped the news that the singer is currently working on his fourth album, the follow-up to 2014’s critically acclaimed and surprise-dropped Black Messiah. (The film reportedly also ends with a note teasing the forthcoming album.)

.

Devil’s Pie chronicles D’Angelo’s 14-year break from music in between his second and third albums. The film follows the singer through loss, three trips to rehab, and a car crash. (Questlove is also listed as a subject in the film and appears in the trailer below.) The documentary’s title comes from his second album, 2000’s Voodoo. In 2015, D’Angelo told Rolling Stone he had a companion album to Black Messiah in the works, but any information on it has yet to be released. Because, duh, it’s probably another surprise album that will make us all lose our minds again.

.

In 2016, D’Angelo performed Prince’s “S...n April” with Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum on The Tonight Show in tribute to the late singer. He reissued his 1995 debut album, Brown Sugar, in 2017, along with three remixed tracks. And, most surprising of all, he quietly contributed to the 2018 video game Red Dead Redemption 2’s soundtrack with the song “Unshaken,” which was released as digital single in January. (We never hear from him because he’s too busy playing the game, apparently.) D’Angelo’s representatives at RCA Records have yet to confirm the news of his new album, in proper elusive fashion.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Thanks.

I know of one of the cats in his crew.

He doesn't speak of him and has moved on.

He released a solo album of his own a few months ago.

If Prince was Speedy Gonzales, D'Angelo is cousin Slowpoke Gonzales Rodríguez.

.

@Greycarp.....You know I'm telling the truth! lol If breaks between albums are more than 3-4 years apart, most music fans, except for the die-hards, would have move on.

He's credited on one short, very weird track with Badu on Slingbaum One. That dropped a month or so ago.

Can't even stream the Gilles Peterson show it streamed in anymore. Seems to be very illusive. Would love to hear it!

Thanks, just watched it, it was a great documentary. He is such a gifted musician but clearly a troubled soul. He seems so lost, you just want to give him a hug. I can see why people around D are worried about him. I hope he will find peace in life one day soon as a human being, he brought his fans so much and IMO he deserves some time to really enjoy life and his tremendous gifts. I wish him all the best.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

What do you think of his 2018 song "Unshaken" on the soundtrack for the Red Dead Redemption 2 hit video game?

Never knew what to make of it. I'm not into country or western movies. I like the harmonies, but it almost feels like a parody.

.

Then again, I don't know those games either, so I might lack some context.

I thought Unshaken was great, one of my favourate tracks of that year. it made me think a full abum in coiloboration with Daniel Lanois, who he worked with on this track, would actually work very well.

I really don't think we will be seeing a lot more output from D.

I hope I'm wrong.

Since D'angelo doesn't drop albums as often as he should it would be more than cool if he'd drop a double or triple album kinda like Prince's Emancipation 3 CD album which had 36 tracks 32 new songs and 4 covers.
