I've loved her for years, but at first, I absolutely HATED her music. My first exposure to her was the "Hounds Of Love" album in 1985. It was SO different 4 me. I was and still am an R&B head, so please understand what my ears WEREN'T accustomed to hearing! LOL! I was okay with the first few, but after hearing The Ninth Wave's "Under Ice" and "Waking The Witch," both of which I still can't listen to when I'm alone in the dark (cuz I'm still a big fuckin' baby and I"m STILL afraid of 'em) After about a week or so, I found myself humming things and when I'd realize what I was humming, I'd wanna go home and play the songs. THAT'S when I realized I was under her spell! Here we are 30 yrs later and I love so many of her songs, but the ones that seem 2 stick out off the top of my head are "Never Be Mine," "I'm Still Waiting," "Mrs. Bartolozzi" and "The Red Shoes." I also love "Eat The Music." Her work is always so diverse musically. I love her Irish session work a LOT! AS far as her albums go, I'd say that "Aerial" is MY go-to. I think it's an utter MASTERPIECE! Good luck exploring! I'll be eager 2 hear back from u with what YOUR ears hear! And if "Waking The Witch" scares u, NO. You CAN'T COME OVER and sleep under my bed! Well...if u bring chocolate, then yes. Much luv! <3

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

An easy entry point would be The Whole Story - it's a pretty great compilation from 1986 - to me her reputation is secured on her music based up to this point.

I very much like her debut The Kick Inside - her voice is young sounding and can be a bit shrill for some. There are some simple vocal and piano songs that are probably some of my fave things shes done on here.

I have Never For Ever and it's got Babooshka and Breathing and Army Dreamers on it, the rest on there are fine if sounding abit of their time.

Hounds of Love is worship - Every home should have one.

Post Whole Story, Aerial is the one I've played most - the second disc A Sky of Honey in particular :luv:

Other people can talk about Lionheart, The Dreaming, Sensual World, Red Shoes etc. I don't think you can go far wrong with her music if it appeals at all.

This bbc doco is quite good https://m.youtube.com/wat...4sLwt8mhZs

Kate Bush is a treasure. She is somewhat of an aquired taste that grows with each listen. For me, it takes several listens to fully appreciate each of her albums. So, I would suggest would be pick one of her acclaimed albums and listen to it several times at first rather than streaming several albums one time. The latter approach just wouldn't due her justice, and neither would playlists based on one or two listens. I agree with the other posts about Hounds of Love and Ariel, though I think side two (disc 2) of Ariel is a more accessible for a new listener than side 1. Sensual World is another wonderful album. Enjoy the ride.

Really? They both kinda give me very different vibes as artists AND as individuals, but I'd love to hear your thought process.

I adore Kate. I got into her full discography finally this year and she's already one of my favorite musicians, and Hounds is in my top 10 albums.

Kate Bush = Ultimate White Girl Magic! nod lol

Real talk, her music and lyrics are powerful to turn any black man with a open mind to a good fan/mark. Prince, 2pac, & Outkast [Big Boi AND Andre] are just 4 of many.

THIS^ is classic! cool

As far as vocals(and somewhat as an artist), Tori Amos reminds me of Kate Bush. And, compared to Madonna, i think artists such as Nina Hagen, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Siouxsie Sioux, Toni Basil etc, are a little more in line with what Kate does. i also think Kate was more avant garde than most of the female singers of her time. To me she's in my top five of late 70's to early 90's women singers/artists.

Anyways, when i first heard and seen Kate, i was sure she was a Witch or somethng... eek She was just that enchanting.

Great post. What artists do you think would be good comparisons to Madonna? Just wondering.

Well, I think she has a very distinct range (although I know shit all about this kind of stuff so I may be wrong). It is something that I couldn't replicate when trying to sing along to her music in my early teens lol

She did an interview with Mojo when the album came out in 2017 and said:"I think the CD is, in a way, much more representative of being at the shows than a DVD. When you're at a live show, it's the whole experience of sitting in the audience, you can scan the stage, choose where to look, it's completely different from film."
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Oh, I didn't know that was why. Also a shame that the tour before Before The Dawn has never been released in full on either CD or video...

umm, everything. i guess there's supposed to be some ethereal depth or something. its like she could be a female Seal of sorts or even the new Stevie Nicks (back then) i dunno. a mystic, gypsy muse or something but she lacks the chops and the material IMO. i wanted to like her, but HOL wasn't interesting

Yeah, but for me, that's what got me interested. I gave The Red Shoes a listen because Prince was on it and really liked it. And then I got the rest of her stuff.

The pre-Prince demo of WSILY that got leaked a few years ago is interesting. A lot more sombre than the released version.

Oh boy! You’re in for amazing surprises nod start from the beginning, she doesn’t have a vast body of work so you’ll have a good pace, and the surprise elements are relentless because every album is different sonically & conceptually. Her voice ranges from sweet, sinister to sensual and emotional. She, Elizabeth Fraser & Minnie Riperton showcased worlds from within just by their singing alone. “Morning Fog” is one of my faves from her.
