H.E.R. “Purple Rain”

Me and my Prince T-shirt went to see the tragic Erykah Badu show in a Brooklyn last night. The opening act was Grammy nominated H.E.R. I couldn’t get into her album so I came late she’s up there braying and shaking, doing her goat thang then she grabs a guitar and starts playing the solo from Purple Rain to end her set. It was nice and loyal to the original, thankfully she did not attempt to sing the song. Badu had an off night too, that show was weird af. U know a show is off when the headliner says mid-show “u see I’m just trying to find reasons to sit down right now” lol

I was at that Barclays show last night! I'm not familiar with H.E.R but was pleasently surprised to hear her play Purple Rain. I actually didn't catch it at first, I was kind of zoned out at this point. My sister and I had been talking about Prince earlier in the evening (Tidal related) and she turned to me with a look like, oh Wow! after H.E.R started to play. That made me actually listen to what she was playing lol Again, I was pleasently surprised! I actually enjoyed her set enough to try to get into her now.

I've seen Badu quite a few times over the years. We left around a quarter to midnight. We live in Jersey and just needed to get ahead of the crowd. But I enjoyed what I saw of her set. I had never seen her perform "Window Seat" or "Out of My Mind, Just in Time" live so that was nice.

I also enjoyed Lucky Daye - the opening act.

I’ve been Badu live each year for about a decade now, it’s good for my mind. Sometimes people have off days. The set was decent she seemed a little too lit/having fun than really focusing on the singing. Like stopping the song so they can beam her up lol. In the past few years her background singers have carried a lot of her weight and some of the new versions of songs like Kiss Me are kinda meh. The opening few numbers were hot but she lost some steam towards the end. It’s all love hopefully next year will be tighter, I wanna see her outdoors at a festival again those sets are usually really fun.

I disagree; Badu was the stronger of the two performances last night. H.E.R makes interesting music and is undeniably talented. I'd like for her to use her voice more strategically since we all know her agility (and I want better enunciation, but I want that from everybody). I didn't get a strong stage presence from her, but she'll continue to perform and that should improve.

My biggest gripe about her portion was the setlist. I appreciated her playing the songs her listeners want to hear but the organization of songs was completely random. It just needed more cohesion. As she makes more music and has more songs to pick from, I think she'll find more seamless transitions.

Badu's sets have that quality and it makes for a more enjoyable show. Her BG vocalists do some heavy lifting, but Badu didn't phone it in (no pun intended). I think she's reminding her audience that she's not their Earth Mother. I don't mind the jokes and silliness since she still sang her songs.

time flies.

I really enjoyed "Kiss Me On My Neck". Backups did a lot of the work, but she did enough to make it special and fun to me. I liked the opening as well with "Hello", that was a nice way to start things. I really didn't need for her to go back to her Baduizm days, but she explained why she needed to do that.

Oveall I enjoyed all the performances. I will definately check out H.E.R's music going forward. And I enjoyed Lucky Daye sprinkling in "Pony" and some Michael Jackson vibes in his set.
