Duran Duran and the Hall Of Fame..people might not like hearing this

Seeing Duran Duran this week inducting ROXY MUSIC into the hall of fame and then also seeing Janet and Stevie and Def Leppard getting into the hall of fame again raised a question, why not DURAN DURAN? And people might not wanna hear this but its all true and shows why next year they should be in. The Hall of fame has had a HUGE issue with the 80's that much is true mainly because of the "stigma" applied by the very writers and critics that VOTE artists in. I personally have felt that DD was on that "edge" of in and not in, but then when the Cure got in and talk of the Eurythmics and Depeche Mode came up I was like, wait are we forgetting someone?? Now the argument and what PEOPLE might not want to hear. One of the main issues to the RNR Hall of fame is influence and there is a huge influence with DURAN but not just influence that started something that ALOT of the recent members benefited from and also it sold their music and pushed them into the stratosphere. The thing that DURAN started...VIDEO! We can argue all day who made the first music video, but that is not the issue here, the issue is that DURAN made this an art form and also made it a selling point, lets not forget DURAN was doing videos in clubs and then making VIDEO albums long before anyone did, extended videos 12 dance mix videos. Now what people might NOT want to hear, is actually a FACT. You can take those who got in recenlty, like Madonna, Janet, MJ, Prince, The Cars, Jovi, u2, REM, Leppard, etc.... They not only ALL benefited from video and MTV but in some cases was a career saving selling point. Whether the Hall likes it or not, alot of those artists and ones coming up now and being on the ballot now are from the MTV video generation and yes this is about music, but the reality is alot of the popularity and influence of these artists was because of VIDEO. Granted great music all around, BUT alot of the reason we knew them was the visuals, and Duran Duran made the visuals a selling point and others rode it into the sunset, now its time for the pioneers to get in.

I couldn't agree more. I've always liked Duran Duran. I also agree with your point on MTV, it was a very heavy influence.

I'm slowly beginning to listen to DD. Haven't really cared for them till recently and knew only so much about them so this is an interesting take on their significance for someone who thought they were just a popular 80's group.

I think they certainly deserve to be in the Rock Hall more than bland Def Leppard, but then again, so does Rick James.

Givin' up food for funk.

Love Duran Duran! Love ‘80s music! Would love to see Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys get inducted, too. Congrats to The Cure’s induction this past weekend!

RRHOF just keeping them in pocket as they can still jam as good as in their hey-day. Hopefully they'll get in soon as I'd love to see them on the stage with a supergroup.

.

Duran Duran are an amazing live act with a full stack of hits and a signature sound. They have worked with some of the best talent and been present at iconic moments in Rock history like Live Aid 85. Its inevitable.

Welcome to being a "Duranie"! I somehow found myself folded into their fan-base in the mid 00s and haven't looked back. My favorite album is All You Need Is Now followed by The Wedding Album.

I saw them when they played right before Prince (I didn´t want to say "opened" because it was a festival). It was the only time that I saw them in concert. They were pretty good. The only song that sounded a bit odd to me was their cover of White Lines by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. lol

What's with all the "people might not want to hear this" stuff? A bit overdramatic, don't you think?

I'm building up 80's playlists by year on Google and purchased Seven and the Ragged Tiger a few months ago to get my hands on "The Reflex" for 1984. Thought the song was aiiiiight for the longest; used to hear it frequently at my last job but when I heard the song through my earbuds I was actually impressed. Now to listen to the rest of the album...

On this forum its not dramatic, I said it like that because fans of Madonna, MJ, Janet might not like to hear that they are in the Hall Of Fame, based on visuals just as much as music all of them rode this, including Prince, a lot of these artists had huge careers because of the visual, not taking away from their music, but it has to be said and we all know you cant go there with those fans sometimes. DD were pioneers of the video age, i dont really care who made the first video, DD made video a relevant art form and a big selling point. DD were doing long form videos long before Michael Jackson and others.

hehe, my wife is a huuuuge Duran Duran fan since way back, and absolutely loves that song. since she's not deep into Hip Hop (though she enjoys lot of crossover rap hits) she wasn't familiar with the original until I played it for her. just as I didin't now the DD cover until I heared it on her playlist

btw, they also did PEs 911 is a joke on that same cover album

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

The first artist to really combine visuals and music in a seamless way was David Bowie way before any of the artists you mentioned.
I don’t think most fans of Madonna, MJ and Janet have any problem with Duran Duran being in the Hall. I’m a huge Madonna fan and I think Duran Duran being inducted is long overdue.
The people most likely to object are the rock purists who would complain Duran Duran aren’t rock enough, but are too pop and use electronics and synthesizers.

The Monkees was doing it before Duran Duran or David Bowie. Also Mike Nesmith was indirectly responsible for MTV being created as Warner Bros. bough his Pop Clips program and Nez won a Grammy for his Elephant Parts long form video.

But again like I said the argument of who made videos first is not the point, the Beatles were making little films all over the place but there was not a channel that compiled it and played it and it helped sell the music. Madonna Janet Paula Michael and all the MTV generation that benefits owed it to Duran Duran because they got it out of the clubs and created it in a way where it was a selling point just as mtv was being born, Duran were the originals at this

DD had a few good songs back in the day, but personally, I don't see the big deal with them. Average band IMHO?

But the Monkees TV show did help to sell their records.

Chaka Khan is a goddess with a stable of hits... Pat Benatar was active/popular in the 80s and has kept releasing albums, but you see her as more deserving than Duran Duran? Interesting. IMHO Pat Benatar is a one-hit wonder with a little padding from a few other songs, with barely a writers credit.

A one-hit wonder?! Pat Benatar is the queen of 80s rock.Powerful voice and she influenced other female artists that came later (Pink, for example).

.

She has 3, maybe 4 big songs: Love Is A Battlefield, Hit Me, We Belong and Heartbreaker.

.

I never understood the disdain on the .org for Duran Duran, a real band with members that contribute equally. Solid hits, tight band, longevity/consistency. Rio alone had as many memorable hits as Benatar had in her whole career.

I agree! Is the standard longevity in terms of hits or influence on other artists?
When Madonna first started before she became famous she recorded songs that sounded like Pat Benatar. Also she was a big influence on 90s females like Shirley Manson, Liz Phair and Alanis Morrisette.

The Hall does seem to favor US artists over U.K. ones though. So I think Pat has a better chance of getting in than Duran Duran which I don’t agree with. Duran Duran, Kate Bush and Depeche Mode should all be inducted.

Pat Benatar is the polar opposite of a "one hit wonder"...what the hell?

she shouldve beat Stevie Nicks into the Hall...and i never said DuranDuran didnt belong...
