I'm surprised he hasn't been targeted by the Twitter Brigade already.

Well just yesterday a woman and I had a discussion on Twitter who kept insisting that Prince married a 19 year old (Mayte).....like No, she was 22. And she claimed he met Mayte when she was 13, since she knew both of them and she is 4 years older and she was also underage when she met them. So Mayte would've been 13 and she was 17.....

It's okay to discuss the whole Mayte thing in a normal way, but I hate it when people twist facts to fit their narrative. There was a good Podcast about the Mayte and Anna Fantastic thing.

Exactly, it's always funny to see that they mention all the others, but completely forget Elvis, wonder why that is? I said in another thread that every docu I watched about him, not once did I see or hear anyone saying that him dating 14 year old was weird or wrong. It's like he's untouchable. If you wanna cancel R.Kelly, wich I did because I just can't listen to his music and separate him from his music. But I must say that I wasn't really a fan of his either, so that's probably why avoiding him is so easy. If there'd be the ultimate proof that MJ was guilty, it would probably harder for me to cancel his music, just because I've been a fan for so long.

It's a cultural thing. Back then, in that part of the world, it wasn't all that unusual for men in their 20s to date women who were 13 or 14. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin. But there's a big difference between what Elvis did and what R Kelly did. That's why the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard etc aren't, or at least shouldn't, be judged by modern standards. The world might has moved on, in most cases for the better, but it's unfair to apply the rules of today to the past.

Yeah, I never heard a woman claim shit like that about elvis.... the only thing priscilla claimed about was him cheating on her.....

What's really telling is what happened on Saturday Night Live this past Saturday.

Pete Davidson gave his commentary on the whole MJ/R Kelly mess and his arguement is pretty much the same as here.

What shocked me was the audible groans and taken abackness of the crowd when he made a joke about the catholic church.

The CATHOLIC CHURCH????

After six thousand exposed priests and Sinead O'Connor you STILL have people publicly defending the church???

How are they even still a thing?

If you didn't know it before you know it now, people are screwed in the head and there's no hope for them.

Yet I'm supposed to get my blood pressure up for R Kelly?

I'll let the courts decide thank you.

Considering how baseless and sensationalistic Leaving Neverland is and how that's gone over, I see your point. However, the media had far more ammo to work with against MJ than they ever did with Prince. P was controversial but not in the OTT tabloid-feeding way that Mike was during the twilight years of his career/life.

Just a question today with all the news about King of Pop and R. Kelly in the news with their music possibly dimming on certain platforms?

Where does it end?

I believe Jimmy Page was very very well known with being with girls as young as 13 while he was an adult. I believe that's against the law. Where's the outrage for Led Zeppelin?

The Rolling Stones? Plenty of underage actions there for sure. David Bowie? etc. etc.

Do we, as a culture, ban their music?

Have moral outrage? Go back and bring it all back into the limelight?

Where does it stop?

Not a big R.Kelly fan but the music banning is ridiculous imo. If I choose to not listen to him that's me. I don't care if others listen to him.

Gotta love "cancel culture". I'm tremendously against censoring music & art. And is "banning" his music gonna stop people from listening to him if they wanted to? Lock his ass up, leave the music alone and let the people decide.

You are making sense, dude. I am all for accountability but it is going too far to ban art.

No music should be banned. I'm not a fan of MJ but I wont stop listening to his good tracks because of these accusations. I watched the documentory and while it was difficult to watch, I was more annoyed at the kids parents.

If we stop appriciating art because we dont morally agree with the artist, then we'll have no more art.

If I found out that Prince ate babies and enjoyed clubbing seals, I'd still listen to his music

Radio stations in the UK aren't playing Zep of the Stones, just bland, 'safe', modern dross ... so they can't be kicked off anyway! biggrin

I think the line needs to be where someone has been formally otherwise where's the cut off? Half the music fraternity have behaviours in their past that are dubious.

The one that cheeses me off is Peter Townsend (The Who) and the kiddie porn they found on his PC; research for a book apparently, which still has come out. And from what I've heard this is the excuse most pedos give when they're caught in this way. He wrote a grovelling apology letter in a couple of newspapers, then a year later when he knew he'd gotten away with it he was back on TV being the smug cocky rock 'n' roll star again. Utter w*nker!

... I think that comes down to your personal stance. I wouldn't even consider listening to Gary Glitter, amd MJ, for me at least, is sliding ever closer to that category.

I have always wondered how on earth Led Zeppelin managed to get away with their Houses of The Holy album cover for so long.

For a long time celebrities have gotten a pass simply because of their fame, not purely because of the validity of their art or their ethics and if a non-famous artist in anyone's immediate entourage had done something against their principles, they would probably instantly stop appreciating their art.

While it is true that fame used to easily blind people, with nowadays digital era, where anyone can create their own celebrity status, the boundaries between the common mortals and the 'elite' have been erased, celebrities are not 'worshiped' as much and people have become more lucid with their values.

As for banning music, it all depends on how charmed / oblivious one is to the'crime', how bad the crime is, and mostly how comfortable we feel listening to the music of someone who has done certain things. It also depends on how skillful the artist is at hiding behind their art and how we personally relate to it.

No one is talking about stopping you from listening to his music, it's about playing in public, i.e. on the radio or e.g. on featured Spotify playlists. Had a quick look at Spotify there and I notice there's no MJ on the "All out 80s" playlist, which I believe is the biggest 80's pop playlist. Perhaps they're already quietly dropping him.

I am gonna just go ahead and say it. There are creeps in all forms of music but race appears to be the mitigating factor about who gets cancelled or not. Jimmy Page clearly kidnapped Lori Mattix when she was 14 and in high school and no one is #mutingzeppelin. Not to mention Iggy Pop cleary admits IN A SONG to sleeping with sable starr (famous groupie) when she was 13. The Rolling STones have a song on Exile on Main St about not caring that fan is 15 or something. It just goes to show the racism in the music industry, despite what they say about being a place for enlightened people, is alive and well. Cancel R. Kelly if you want to. But where TF is the surviving Jimmy Page/Steven Tyler documentaries???

Look up what Lori Mattix and Zeppelin's Road Manager, Richard Cole, have said about the situation. It was revealed that she was essentially kidnapped (she likens to a beautiful romantic time) despite it being 1973-ish Cole knew that it was highly illegal what they were doing as she was severly underage, they kept her locked in Jimmy's room throughout the houses of the holy tour, so no one would know they were together. From what Richard Cole admitted from his own mouth, he basically threw lori over his shoulder into a limo and took her to Jimmy Page, with whom she remaiend for a relatievly long duration.

I don't see what banning their music is going to do. These allegations are nothing new. Alot of behavior in the entertainment business would raise alot of eyes brows if people would really look at it. But for some reason they are quick to throw black entertainers under the bus. They not going to ban anything when it come to Ten, Jimmy Page, The Rolling Stone, Huge Hefner, Harey Weinstein, and etc. When some these people were doing questionable things it was seen as cool now people want to look down on it. They trying to slam R Kelly for having two young girlfriends but when Huge Hefner did it , they gave him a show and it was cool. I do find it interesting how now people are turning on MJ and R Kelly over allegations that were always there. At the end of the day people are going to listen and watch what they want just like people are going to believe what they want so banning this and that is just ridiclous because they are going to have ban a lot if that was the case.

No, no, and no. It's not about R Kelly having 2 girlfriends....it's about R Kelly having sex slaves that are around the ages of 13-14.

BIG difference.

I know about R kelly and his underage sex slaves so I don't need you to tell me about that. If it's not about him having two girlfriends why did did Gail ask the ladies if they are in a three way relationship. She was basically asking if they all sleep together at the same time. She did ask other question that had to do with the issues at hand but I though the question was odd. I mean of all the quesion to ask. If you look into Huge Hefner and research what some of the girlfriends had to say it would raise an eyebrown. Huge was also friends with Bill Croby. Huge might not have been extreme like Bill or R Kelly but he was not an angel. By today's climate he should be drag too. That is my point.

[Edited 3/10/19 10:20am]

Having sex slaves is relevant and thus makes this a poor example to use as evidence of racism. I'm sure there are many other pertinent cases can be made. When a bad example is given, it diminishes the argument.

That's the whole thing. Jackson is dead, so he can no longer defend himself and even when he was still alive, his defense was: "No, I didn't do it, don't believe it!"
So are we going to just take these two mens words for it? I don't know, but Jackson had an unhealthy obsession with young boys, that's for sure.

The perpetual "they" keep trying and bringing up one thing after another. The court of public opinion. The concept of, if it makes me even a little bit uncomfortable then someone needs to be severely punished. Regardless if there is a real life victim or not. It's becoming a free for all of complaints.
