I still get chills when I listen to the song “Out Here On My Own” from the ‘Fame’ movie. It’s such a beautifully haunting piano ballad and Irenes’ vocals are amazing! She is a very talented artist who deserves a lot more recognition than she received.

What she doing these days? I agree, she doesn't get enough recognition. Of course right now I'm wondering if she has a P letter stashed away somewhere.

speaking of Prince....I always had this crazy idea that, when Vanity left the Purple Rain movie project,Irene Cara should have pursued that role eek I think she and Prince would have been a cool pairing onscreen. The only thing is,I don’t know if Irene would have been comfortable playing such a “sexy” role and parading around in lingerie, singing a song like “Sex Shooter”,lol.

When I worked in the music business, I often dealt directly with Irene Cara. I'll just say that she had "issues ", and leave it at that

i had a 7" single with that photo as the cover...it straight imprinted on my 10 year old mind what would be defined as 'sexy' for the rest of my life.

I was passed when she was killed off in Roots: The Next Generation. Yeah, I know it was based as a true story of Alex Hailey but Still didn't care.

After the “Breakdance” single in 1984,I never heard anything else from Irene on the radio.Does anyone know what happened? It seems that her music career ended prematurely.

very talented woman, i didn't know until a few years ago that she was a fine pianist. word on the street was she was blackballed, i read one account where they said she was mentally unstable, because she had issues with the people in the business. I don't know if that's true or not but not everyone wants their life ruled by some asshole. women have it much, much worse than men in that business, always has to be a svengali figure behind them, well, if a woman has the talent she doesn't need that. Men have that too but in a different way and they stand up for themselves a lot faster, elvis had the colonel, michael had a slew of mentors who he'd fire, bruce springsteen gave up a couple years of his career to get out of a bad contract, women seem to either just take it or implode like whitney.

fun fact: initially,Irene didn't want to work with producer Giorgio Moroder. The reason? Everyone was saying that Irene sounds alot like Donna Summer and she didn't want to invite further comparisons by working with Donna's old producer. But in 1983, she gave it a try and the song ("Flashdance....What A Feeling") became a Number One hit.

Pete...You're thinking of Jennifer Beals. Yes, supposedly she was considered as a co-star in "PR", but I think she was continuing her studies in college...Jessica Biel was born in 1982..(lol). I think actress Gina Gershon auditioned for the role too.
