Jazz Singer Nancy Wilson dies at 81

Nancy Wilson Dies at 81; Jazz Singer Who Turned Songs Into Stories

Nancy Wilson, whose skilled and flexible approach to singing provided a key bridge between the sophisticated jazz-pop vocalists of the 1950s and the powerhouse pop-soul singers of the 1960s and ’70s, died Thursday at her home in Pioneertown, Calif. She was 81.

Ms. Wilson’s death, which came after a long illness, was confirmed by her manager, Devra Hall Levy.

In her long and celebrated career, Ms. Wilson performed American standards, jazz ballads, Broadway show tunes, R&B torch songs and middle-of-the-road pop pieces, all delivered with a heightened sense of a song’s narrative.

“I have a gift for telling stories, making them seem larger than life,” she told The Los Angeles Times in 1993. “I love the vignette, the plays within the song.”

Some of Ms. Wilson’s best-known recordings told tales of heartbreak, with attitude. A forerunner of the modern female empowerment singer, with the brassy inflections and biting inflections to fuel it, Ms. Wilson could infuse even the saddest song with a sense of strength.

What a wonderful voice we have lost. Her legacy is as rich as her voice.

She had some of the best renditions of Christmas songs ever.

My absolute favorite song from her, from the legendary album Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley

I have been a huge Nancy Wilson fan since 1989 with her "A Lady With A Song" CD, which is one of my favorite albums of all time. This woman was truly a song stylist. Miss Wilson bought elegance, style and grace to every song she recorded. RIP Nancy.

R.I.P., Fancy Nancy. I was a Jr. in H.S. and saw the front cover of "Take My Love" in 1980 at Strawberries Records & Tapes in Harvard Square. I was instantly captivated by the warmth; the red sequin dress, the velvet couch (back cover) the low glowing lamp behind her sophisticated poise and grace and bought it. My father told me that she was "around when" he was in the Air Force in the Late 50's. Here we were 20 yrs later and I was wondering if it was the same Nancy Wilson. My Dad confirmed that it was. To this day, I STILL CAN'T get enough of "The Sadness In My Eyes," (MASTERpiece!!!!) "Let's Hold On To Love" or "I Loved You All The Time." Listening to an older woman teach me about love was a revelation in itself. Natalie Cole and Minnie Riperton did the same 4 me. To have my "Take My Love" album autographed by her at a concert in Boston (1998) still has me floating on a cloud! She's mesmerizing and SOOOOOO classy. An absolute LADY. They don't make 'em like her anymore. My other faves include "With My Lover Beside Me," "Love, Nancy" and "Music On My Mind." God bless her family. Thanks 4 all the great tunes over the years, Momma! <3

I had a love hate relationship with Nancy Wilson, singing. Sometimes she would sing like a hummingbird and sometimes Ms. Wilson could strangle a song. lol At the end I came to accept the singles or albums she made and disregard those I disliked.

For several years Ms. Wilson hosted a profile of Jazz musicians on NPR. When Chicago had a smooth Jazz radio station Ms. Wilson and Ramsey Louis hosted a "pure" jazz programm Saturday night's. Once Ramsey Louis played an ablum for Mr. Wislon singing live, it was a pure delight. I'd like to own but I've never been able to fing it.

God speed and R.I.P Ms. Wilson.

Me too. Some things made me cringe, and others filled me with absolute ecstacy! "The Sadness In My Eyes" from "Take My Love" is BREATHtaking! <3

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
