2019 Grammy Award Nominations

Th 2019 grammy nominations came out yesterday. Thoughts and reacetions?

It seems more diverse than usual, though generally it was a poor year for music IMO. Coincidentally, two of the three albums I mentioned in the Album of the year thread were nominated- the Kaycey Musgraves and Janelle Monet, were nominated. It also included the recent album by Brandi Carlilse which would have been the 4th album I would have chosen. This is not to toot my old horn, as I don't tend to think highly of the Grammys and must have lost my good taste lol . It is to say that I was rather pleased with the album nominations, especially Janelle Monet. Don't follow popular music enought to make an educated opinion about the songs.

This doesn't seem to be allowing one to connect with this link. I know there is another step on this site rather than just pasting the link but forgot what it was. Could someone help? Thanks.

I'm disappointed that Taylor Swift didn't get but 1 nod. Her album was fantastic as was her Reputation Concert.

Nicki Minaj got locked out, which surprises me.

Glad to see Janelle got nominated.

As usual they didn’t seem to dig too deep with stuff I see a lot of things nominated in different categories, some glaring mistakes, Bebe Rexha as best new artist she had two releases prior so she shouldn’t even be up, DUA Lipa should win that easily. Not an Ariana fan at all, glad on the pop front to see Camila Cabello recognized for a solid album, the others in there are so so. Black Panther as alvum of the year, again I hate soundtracks getting nods in this category feel its a bit unfair should be separate. Kacey and Janelle it was great to see people really sleep on Kasey but she is one of the top females out there. Lenny K should have been in there a huge miss by the Grammys one of his best records and records of this years, not sure if it missed the eligible window.

I think this is the first year since I got into music that I haven't paid any attention to the mainstream charts. That's not to say there aren't a literal few inclusions here I haven't listened to (Dirty Computer) or am aware of (Scorpion) but overall, I'm completely ignorant of what's been happening on the pop(ular) music landscape in 2018.

I don't understand Drake's popularity. His voice is as flat as a pancake and monotone. God Is A Woman is one of the worst songs of the year. Absolute drivel. I don't like Ariana Grande's voice.

Where are the real singers with real talent? How boring is this? yawn I think I can skip these awards from now on.

Yeah, and where the hell is Lenny's nomination?? Pathetic.

It's an unpopular opinion but we as humans have lowered our standards. Drake is talented but way overhyped and has only gotten bigger the more mediocre his music has become. He still has a handful of good tracks occasionally but his albums are a glut of same-sounding filler tracks that aren't fit to be B-sides (artists should start doing those again, BTW).

I like Ariana but much like with Drake, her material is weak. Her best album was her first IMO as her voice fits R&B more than pop yet they keep having her sing pop music. Some songs have a lite R&B orientation but it doesn't scratch the itch for me.

We got some talent today but everything these artists do or attempt to do has been done better in the past and in most cases, their talent is wasted trying to appeal to the lowest common-denominator of people in the cheapest, easiest way possible. The way mainstream music is programmed today doesn't really allow much creativity and instead only persuades artists to churn out easy, interchangeable songs in the Hope's they become hits. Streaming really has hurt music; on a mainstream level you got artists (like I mentioned with Drake esrlier) releasing LPs with a 20+ song tracklist to rack up streaming numbers but doing so at the expensive of what could have been a better project with a much more cohesive collection of songs. You can only blame the artists so much for this, they're just playing the game and trying to maximize their returns and with how things are set up today, they have to make they get their's but it's made the mainstream music scene predictable, bland, boring and missable. That same predictability I feel is even trickling down to the indie and underground levels now on top of those artists having to work within a system that works against them and only allows the already rich to remain rich while they collect pennies on the dollar.

It's bad.

No Grammy love for Kamasi Washington or the Bad Plus?

Wow. I'd have thought the voters in the jazz category knew better.
