Kanye Trying To Get Ownership Of His Master Recordings Like PRINCE Did!!

Kanye discussed his ongoing negotiation with his record label to buy back the rights to his masters. He compared himself to the late musician Prince who publicized his battle with Warner Bros. to buy back his masters.

“I need my publishing. I got the money,” said Kanye. “I’m not gonna say the ‘S’ word. I’m not Prince; I don’t need to write it on my face.

I cannot co-sign this enough.

I will say Kanye, as usual, has a one-note point of reference. While Prince did set a new standard for artist's rights, Mr. I-Don't-Read-Books-I-Just-Sit-And-Think should know that Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and many others owned their music, too.

As a friend of mine remarked today, Kanye has totally discredited himself at this point...

Yeah, this thread is a dupe. We've been discussing it over here on this thread,

And post #314 already posted this subject of how Ye mentioned Prince...

tump

* sign up with filthy multinational corporation
* sell your life-force to multinational corporation over many years, like so many others before you
* generate billions for corporation while they give you crumbs in return. Wealth! Fame!
* sign up with filthy State-Endorsed social networks with no reservations. Use them for years.
* complain when these Tools of State Control demonstrate central control over (dis)likes & content
* complain when your employer refuses to sell you the work you sold them (for peanuts)
* declare oneself the best recording artist
* declare oneself free of one's laptop
* declare that The Man made you buy a house
* declare that We are creative people and essentially 'don't need stuff'
* (apparently) freedom was not an issue a decade ago. Oh but it is now.
* speak against material things after one has amassed them: never before
* ignore the struggles for Masters that artists before you had to go through
* be apparently unaware that you are promoted precisely because you make your employer more money than you will ever see. No other reason
* act surprised when people 'touch your brain', though it comes with the territory of every public figure (and private figure) and should be nothing new to anybody. People will always tell you what you should be doing.

Good luck bro. You fed the beast. They gave you crumbs. Now chase that freedom and what they stole from you.

Yet you just referred to him as Yeezus. He doesn’t need his ego stroked more.

When I worked with Kanye he was the coolest celebrity I ever met. Very honest & down to earth and a pleasure. The tragic death of his Mother changed him forever.

With that said I will NEVER speak negative of him. I'll just pray for him. pray

I was remarking to a friend of mine that Kanye was different when his Mom was still alive--I think she would have been the one that he would listen to and go and get the treatment he needs for his bi-polar challenges... As it is, he seems to be surrounded by sycophants who care about nothing but the money they can make from him...

He better do it now before its snatched by somebody else. R Kelly just said he tried to buy his back and the label wont let him.

.

I wonder how this works for someone like Kanye versus Prince as a lion's share of Kanye's alleged artistry is reliant on samples and interpolations of other artists.

He can still own them, and those songs will still have copyright shares going to the righful artists credited under ASCAP or BMI. Many of his songs wont ever be 100% sans 80's and Heartbreak and Ye which prob featured the least amount of sampling.

Thing that gets me with these situations is the artists go in to these deals with their eyes open ... the T&Cs are there to be read. You might not agree with the T&Cs, but if thats the case don't sign the recording contract in the first place. Seems disingenuous to sign the recording contract then bitch about it all later.

And they should really have learned something from both Prince & George Michael.

That's what I don't understand. When they were getting tens of millions just for signing, they weren't crying then, were they?

I didn't have tonnes of sympathy for Prince. George Michael I did because he was locked into some contract he signed as a teenager before Wham? wasn't he?

All these new artists sign the deal because they get a lot more than money, the access and agency within the industry and endorsement from the big system helps their profile a lot.

Even Radiohead wouldn't be anywhere without getting a boost from Parlophone or whoever it was in the UK.

Exactly! There's tons of precedent out there, which unless they've been living under a rock for the last sixty years they should know about.

I think the fame and money changes some of these artists, and not in a good way. All sense of rational behaviour and perspective goes out the window. Reminds me of the Kurt Cobain thing ... was pushing for success for his band, then when his band got too successful he wasn't happy.

There aren't many Bowies or Springsteens out there who remain unchanged by the success they get.

Oh Kanye definitely ISN'T Prince. But good luck to him and well done for pursuing this, which is his right. What an impact Prince is still having on the music industry-a truly remarkable man.
