She clearly has a sense of humour and does not take herself seriously. I love the silly light character she projects - and if you think it's not a character she plays then you are kidding yourself.

Plus she is looking really great - more power to her!

I agree! And sometimes you just have to keep telling a person to get the fuck out.

Have had this song stuck in my head all afternoon. My standard response to any question I get asked for the next couple weeks is going to be me singing "How 'bout u..." biggrin

Ariana is a good singer but she can't sing as well as Mariah can! In my opinion!

While not taking anything away from Mariah, Ariana is what Mariah wishes she still was today. (And I'm not one to pit women against each other like that.)

The thing is, Mariah is older now. Not out of touch or anything, but voices change with age. In another thread, we talked about how Michael Jackson often had his songs a half-step or full-step lower than the record, to partially save his voice on tour (which is grueling) and because he aged.

Mariah needs to do the same thing. She is 48, and God bless her for still making music, but she doesn't have a 22-year-old voice anymore. Even Auntie ReRe's voice changed over time. The cooing she does in this shit songs (read: pregnant pigeon) is a cheeky way to gloss over her not being able to hit the notes she could 25 years ago.

Ariana will face this in another 20 years (she's 25 now). Everyone does. Age deepens a voice. I love Ariana Grande's voice. It's strong and solid. If you ever hear her isolated mic on YouTube, the bitch is sangin' like a MFer!

The comparisons between Ariana and Mariah were obviously going to happen in the public. Their voices are similar but not identical. That whistle register tho! My God, they're both brilliant at it and few can pull it off! Even Whitney didn't have that whistle register. She just had power like Aretha. Whitney really fucked up her gift, though. Mariah's only real obstacle is age, not smoking crack.

In short, Ariana can sing as well as Mariah and these days (with a 23-year gap between them) she can sing better than Mariah on any given day. Again, not taking away from Mariah's accomplishments and legacy. She'll forever be amazing. Maybe she should start singing songs that fit her voice more and still sound fresh and new on radio, etc.

I agree with everything you said. I only like one song by her, but she's a terrific vocalist.

"I Don't" had more flava. Am HAPPY there are no guest rappers for once. With a voice like Mariah's, they all make the productions too busy. Same with Janet. "No Sleeep" would have fared even BETTER without J. Cole up on it. Again, MY opinion/what MY EARS are hearing. Peace, luv 'n blessin's. <3

this is another really poor excuse 4 a leadoff single.

hmmm wow....could this really be the leadoff single from an upcoming album? eek

I'm thinking it's just a standalone single to keep her fans happy until the album is done. This song is waaayyyyyy too weak to be a lead single, lol

People are meme-ing the heck out of it. And the hook is memorable. You can't get steam at any real broadcasting outlet with that lyric though.

I love this song. Actually cant get it out of my head. In two days I knew the lyrics. Has an arresting melody and subtle synthy background. Its mysterious. I really like this song and one of my favorite singles of the year actually.

I remember seeing Mariah and Celine Dion years ago with Aretha on some "Divas" show... Mariah and Celine strained their voices trying to compete with Aretha while she effortlessly hit every note without releasing the full power of her majestic voice...

I know Mariah doesn't have the voice she used to, but even so, listening to this it immediately became apparent to me that she has something, a certain warmth in her voice that's missing from Ariana Grande who's often compared to her.

Welp, Ariana Grande just dropped a whole album missing that certain warmth. If that's her main competition these days, Mariah's still going to have to do something other than one boring single per year.

turns out I warmed up to this single for that exact reason

here's what i think of Mariah music from the last 22 years...... fart

Getting old kills careers... Mariah will be 50 next year, dresses like she's 20 and acts like she's 13...

She was a fierce 20 year when she started, her voice was so strong, when she came off the "pop" princess path...that was about 1997/98...her career went south and no one believed her new "street" image sounds...

nineteen85 Produced the track.
I know you and I both loved Majid Jordan’s first two albums.
Nineteen85 worked with Majid Jordan on those albums.
Mariah’s songwriting and Nineteen85 production is a perfect mix.

Nice!! I didnt know that, loved Majid Jordan's albums yup. Real warm, dark production, much like the single so this makes sense. I hope the album is well done then! smile

It's not surprising that zero sales were generated. The song is a horrid, trend-chasing snoozer. GTFO, indeed.
