Why did you start a new Aretha thread instead of editing your first thread? Now there are 4 and 2 of them are yours.

I disagree. This focuses on her death which is merited it's own thread.

Ok great. Now you can flood both threads with giant photos of shoes. When Rick Hall died you posted stuff from his rival recording studio. Whatever, I paid my respects here already, on 3 other threads.

she apparently had pancreatic cancer in 2009 too, anyone remember? Amazing she lasted so long if that is true.

are you kidding dude? probably the greatest voice ever in american music, there are a few in that arguement but she's arguably the best, that should count for something. Not to mention she was a child prodigy on the piano and could play her ass off, something most of the other divas wouldn't know a thing about. I was never a superfan but I recognize her greatness.

either way, it's not a good time for something like that. And i'm a musician, i know what it means to have the worst voice communicate with you better than the best, hell, springsteen is my all time fave and not because of his croaking.

Undisputed Queen. All these other lady singers just aspired to be the Queen. Unfunkwitable. Self taught on the piano, never read music. Just gifted.

I was communicating to the other poster that he missed out on the richness of Aretha 's voice and complete artistry. For the record, She had no bigger fan than me.

in my opinion, better than Prince on the keys. One of the greats of the rock and roll era (whether you count her as part of that tradition or not). Being a pianist, i love watching her play, don't play that song for me is a great one, i also loved her playing on a temptations tribute where it looked like she was pretty much improving. Like I said, she almost stands alone for what we usually think of as "divas" she could actually play an instrument well.

sad I saw on the news that Aretha passed away... I'm so glad that she got to spend her last hours with people she knew and loved. She lived a long life, fought the good fight, but I can't help but wish she could have enjoyed another 10 years in this earthly existence. But she has moved on to a better one... dove Thank you for all the decades of wonderful music, Aretha--you will never be forgotten.

I am, too... I can't help but think of David Bowie's passing... He may be the only person who turned his struggle with dying from cancer into a work of art. I still can't look at the video of Lazarus any more, now knowing what it means... sad

Yes. I knew she had been battling cancer for several years. Even when she was denying it. At one point, she and my aunt were under the care of the same doctor.

On another note, I hope her estate, Atlantic or whoever owns them finally reissue those last four Atlantic albums on CD. Long overdue. I have the bootlegs but we definately need some proper reissues. They are not as bad as some have made them out to be.

I remember an interview on TV ( I forget with who) where Aretha denied that she had cancer. Now, it is obvious that she battled it but she treasured her privacy (as always) and I respect her for that. She fought the good fight and may all of us go out with the same fortitude as she did. I had a great aunt just like her! I also hope they will re-issue the last four Atlantic albums...

She was such an impressive vocalist that her skills on the piano seem to take a back seat. She should've been recognized as a pianist in the way that Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Joel were. RIP
